Today we’d like to introduce you to Hongjoin.
Hongjoin is a 21-year-old Spotify Radar Artist born in Singapore and is currently based in Boston.
A musician born in the era of the pandemic, Hongjoin started being active on music media platforms which helped take off his music journey. He took this period to hone his production skills which now gives him the ability to translate his music onto his digital workstation.
A firm believer of the DIY process, he records, produces, and mixes all his tracks from start to finish. Since releasing his 9-track debut album Petrichor in August 2022, Hongjoin has evolved his sound and has expanded his musical boundaries. Blending the beauty of intricate production and purposeful arrangement, he believes in telling stories with every track. His music balances cinematic soundscapes with honest and hard-hitting songwriting, which makes Hongjoin’s tracks a place for authenticity and relatability.
Hongjoin’s upcoming EP, to be rolled out in June, will span across multiple genres within the alternative realm, including Indie-Pop and Alt-Rock. It is his most ambitious project up to date and is set to solidify an exciting 2023 for the artist as he establishes a clear musical direction for his sound as an artist.
“I feel that I want to be self-sufficient as a producer at this early stage of my music career. After I write a song, I picture it in a certain way and hope to translate it as accurately as possible. With how advanced and accessible music technology is today, it is amazing that I can bring these musical ideas to life in the most authentic way possible!”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Pursuing music has never and will never be a smooth road in my opinion. With how radical the music industry is today, it’s really easy to compare numbers and feel like you’re not enough but I have learnt that making art is never a competition. I’ve always made music for myself and the only way to make the most honest form of music is to continue making it for yourself. I’ve learnt to always take my time working on my craft and staying true to my sound!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer-songwriter and I strive to make music to make others feel less alone. I record, produce and mix all my tracks myself because I believe in the DIY process. The music exists in its final product in my head and unpacking these ideas into something tangible and coherent as a track to move people is a creative process that I am obsessed with.
What does success mean to you?
Success is finding meaning in what you do every day, and making a meaningful footprint in this world that you are proud of!
