Daily Inspiration: Meet Heather Sprague

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Sprague.

Hi Heather, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began with gymnastics at age five and discovered ballet at 12 years old. Movement of all types – ballroom, lyrical, yoga, qi gong, salsa, west coast swing, etc. – has been a medium for inner peace, self-awareness and growth, emotional evolution, and a beautiful way to build community. It has been a journey of private lessons, coaching, performing, and competing, and to this day, I still get coached and continue to fuel my growth in every way possible so that I continue to have all that I can to give back and share with my community.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t believe any road focused on growth, success, and building is ever a smooth one. We actually need the bumps, failures, and obstacles to teach us and to give us the fuel and clarity for the next right step toward our vision. Building a dance company has many components – team building, leadership, vulnerability, technique, conflict resolution, creative vision, record and finance proficiency, and the ability to visualize, take massive action, and never give up.

I have come through debilitating physical injuries, being mistreated or betrayed by those I trusted most, having a different vision for dance than the surrounding community and being judged and criticized for being different, and unexpectedly having my entire business model turned upside-down and seemingly impossible to solve during Covid.

There is always a solution to everything when we are calm enough to see it, and when one door closes, three more are opening the way to a better future.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I teach dance and yoga in order to empower individuals into their highest and happiest potential. I believe that mind-body-heart alignment can be powerfully generated through movement, breath, and right mindset.

My dance classes focus on three things: technique, community, and unifying mind-body through positive and empowered thought and movement.

Technique is a HUGE part of my classes because within our discipline is our freedom. Art is precise, spontaneous, and complex, and so we must study our self, our body, our mind and know how to move skillfully within all three.

Community is my WHY. Within community, we have a sense of belonging, of hope, and of joy. These are essential to a joyful life, and I want to provide that atmosphere for the people around me.

I am most proud of seeing my students grow in skill and in inspiration! I love watching them light up, shed fear and old limiting beliefs, and learn how to express and connect with themselves and other people. It is amazing.
