Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Caprara.
Hi Hannah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I first got started in photography in college, taking a Photojournalism class that led to taking stills on student films. I discovered I loved to tell a story visually, and the response from my friends was so encouraging that I quickly abandoned my Public Relations degree to pursue a photo career. It’s taken me on quite a journey, from event and lifestyle photography to editorial and portrait, to product photography. After a year as an in-house product photographer, I recently left to jump into freelance full-time. Though it’s a lot to get used to, I’m really enjoying the freedom to work on my own projects and to connect with brands, agencies, and individuals.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road! I’ve learned to stop comparing myself to others and to enjoy where my career has taken me over the years. Coming of age in a large city has brought me some incredible experiences and a lot of learning experiences. I’ve learned to stand up for myself, to say no when the project or compensation doesn’t align with my goals, and to know my own worth.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Though I dabble in different genres of photo work, I feel the happiest and most creative when I’m working with a concept and a team. Working in a collaborative environment, when I can connect with my subject, is where I feel like my best work lies. I specialize in 35mm and 120mm film but shoot digital as well. Often I’m hired for film projects, and though I love studio work, I’ve created a larger portfolio of portraits in urban environments with natural light.
I’m proud of how far I’ve come and how much I’ve learned over time, as well as the lasting connections I’ve made. I’m excited to see where this next chapter takes me!
I think what sets me apart from others is that I look for honesty and movement in my subjects – I’m not always looking for the “prettiest” or posed photo; it’s the in-between moments where I find some of my favorite shots.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
My email is listed on both my website and my Instagram, which I prefer over DMs because I don’t always see those. I’m always up for collaboration and welcome pitches for concepts. Support me by following and interacting with my work on social media, especially since Instagram doesn’t prioritize photos anymore!
