Today we’d like to introduce you to Halle Pennington.
Hi Halle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Humboldt County, California, the epicenter of heritage cannabis cultivation. The hands-on experience in the field every day learning from the best in the business has served me well. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to learn from my father, Nathaniel Pennington the Founder & CEO of Humboldt Seed Company, who is an incredible breeder and also from the many other experts in the area. We are the largest licensed cannabis seeds provider in California and now also sell to legal markets worldwide. As Products Executive I help to identify breeding stock for the following year, handle dispensary orders and licensed farm orders, oversee the Metrc seed-to-sale traceability system and also design our yearly seed catalogs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing about being deeply invested in the cannabis industry has been smooth. Notoriously volatile, both before recreational legalization and after, the landscape has remained unpredictable. We have learned to be quick on our feet and to pivot and adapt when things change. At the end of the day for me the struggles are well worth it. I feel lucky to be able to pursue my passion and continue the work of creating stable, reliable genetics for both home growers and large-scale commercial cultivators.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to be patient and trust the process. Understanding that your journey in business is your own and nobody else’s has helped me to stop comparing and simply forge ahead. It is always better to build as you go rather than overinvest and extend yourself. This is perhaps the most important thing I’ve learned. It’s a safer approach to growth.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The large-scale pheno hunts we do each year to identify the best cannabis plants for our breeding program is my favorite part of the job. It entails combing through thousands of plants in the field to identify the best specimens that then go on to become the foundation of our breeding program.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness and being fulfilled in today’s world where everything moves at lightning speed can be a challenge. It helps me to focus on the simple things. Spending time in our cannabis and vegetable gardens and cooking elaborate, slow meals with my extended family helps to ground me. I am lucky to work closely with my father. We are pretty good about shutting off and making time for family dinners, but often we also end up discussing business over dinner which is not a bad thing as sometimes when we are just relaxing and talking casually new ideas will emerge. For me business, family and community are all a bit intertwined. It may be a somewhat unconventional way to live, but it’s all I’ve ever known and it suits me pretty well.
Pricing:
- Blueberry Muffin is our signature strain which has become a bit of a cult classic. It has an uncanny smell of fresh-baked blueberry muffins straight out of the oven.
- Chicken N’ Wafflez – We normally stick to breeding for what we really get excited about and not 100 % for market demand. This one is a special case where it met our standards, but also checks all the boxes for what the market wants. It’s got the special purple color, high potency and the exotic terpenes consumers love.
- 3 seed package – $45
- 5 seed package – $70
- 10 seed package – $120
- Bulk pricing – for commercial operators also available
