Daily Inspiration: Meet Gregg Wietstock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregg Wietstock.

Gregg, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was around 5 years old I was put in accordion lessons, my mom sang in the church choir. When I was 9 I heard a neighbor playing Creedence, Down on the Corner. Looking back I believe that was how I was drawn to the bass as my instrument. When I was 15 I joined a band with some neighborhood kids, but my partying got the best of me. I always kept playing music though, but it was different back then, indie artists had to send recordings to college radio. There was no internet or social media. So it wasn’t very easy to create your own music and have very many people listen, or have as far a reach. As the possibilities grew for self promotion and I also grew in my personal recovery, I naturally gravitated toward my love of creating music. It has been a long, interesting, and rewarding journey. It has always had its hurdles and ups and downs, but All in all, I’m doing what I love and you can’t beat that!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My struggle is with myself, and I released a song, ‘Face To Face’ in 2020 that I originally conceived of when I was deep in the grips of addiction. I was looking for one more song to add to my 5 song EP, and this song that has been rolling around in my head for over 20 years just popped up and I was like, “oh yeah Face To Face!” and added it to my album, making it a 6 song EP. But, yeah, addiction to everything from which I could wrest satisfaction, that was my main struggle.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have a creative mind, so I’m naturally trying to create something all the time. I am primarily a bassist and play in two rock bands with another one in the works which will make it three if it works out. So, most people know me as a bass player but now that I have had 11 original songs professionally produced and up on all the internet music platforms and attended music awards shows and received nominations,, I’m getting recognized for that as well. I’ve also started to play solo gigs with just me on acoustic guitar, singing my own songs and a few choice covers. The thing that I am most proud of, although I give credit to the grace of God, is that I’ve remained clean and sober for almost 20 years now. All of these blessings are the result of that.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
No luck at all. Grit and hard work, period!
