Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabi & Matheus.
Hi Gabi & Matheus, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We’re a couple who found each other through music. In 2016, I moved to Sao Paulo after spending a year studying music and English in Los Angeles. I had always been a singer/songwriter, and living in LA gave me the certainty I needed to pursue music as a full-time career. When I returned to Brazil, I enrolled in an international music college, Souza Lima, where we eventually met.
My husband Matheus is a talented producer and guitarist, and we quickly discovered we had a lot in common, especially our dreams of making it big in the music industry. Time went on, and we became a duo, constantly working and building a solid network in Brazil.
Things went well until Matheus received a significant scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. We didn’t want to let this opportunity slip away, so we married and pursued our dreams in the US. It wasn’t easy, especially with the pandemic throwing a wrench into our plans. But we adapted and learned to make the most of our situation. Being in Boston was a game-changing factor for both of us. I learned even more about the US music industry, learned the ins-and-outs of how to deal with audiences in America, while Matheus taught music, performed, and even got awards from the Guitar Department at Berklee and got invited to work with one of his professors, and, ultimately, to perform in a concert that featured Lalah Hathaway.
Together, after Matheus’ graduation, we started providing custom songs, advertisement soundtracks, and music production for various clients. We even participated in pitches for ad songs for major US and Brazil-based brands. Despite the pandemic, we’re proud to have sold more than 300 songs in 2022.
I also released an EP that we produced ourselves, which was a huge accomplishment for us.
I also gained substantial recognition as a singer within the EDM world by partnering with reputable DJs from Brazil. We feel truly blessed to be able to do what we love and make a living out of it.
We’ve come a long way and have big plans for the future. But for now, we’re happy creating and producing music together every single day!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Art takes inspiration, and art truly reflects whatever is happening inside our minds. And the life of an artist has an immensity of ever-changing factors, sometimes within a single day… And we’re a duo, so all these factors are double!
When we faced the pandemic, the homesickness, and every stressful factor that life may have presented to us, we learned that we needed to master the skill of neutering these things.
We’re not immune to threats to our creation process, obviously, but I think our main challenge up to this day is to work on our mindset constantly so our final product (music) – a lot of music, by the way – is always immaculate, no matter what! And I think we learned how to manage it, to be honest.
We’re now in a place where no matter what’s happening outside, we’ll make it work to fulfill our busy schedules of providing high-quality music for many different needs.
The realm of TV and Advertising Music works on tight deadlines – and so do all of the other music production industries, honestly. We learned how to adapt to this and are proud of it!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a duo, we bring a unique approach to Music Production. Although we still enjoy performing live and cherish those opportunities, we have recently shifted our focus toward remote music production. This shift comes as a response to the industry’s demand for authentic soundtrack providers.
Many stakeholders in the music industry recognize the distinctiveness of our work due to our dynamic as a couple. While there’s nothing wrong with independent producers with their own set of different singers, we truly believe that our ability to craft everything ourselves, from composition and arranging to melodies, vocals, mixing, and mastering, is what sets us apart.
We’re thrilled that the industry is recognizing the value of our approach, and we feel grateful for the opportunities we’ve had to showcase our skills. We remain committed to creating high-quality music that speaks to our audience and reflects our passion for the craft.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Loving what we do so that we can professionally give all of us.
