Today we’d like to introduce you to Filippos Fragkogiannis
Hi Filippos, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From an early age, I possessed a keen eye for the urban landscape, a knack for expressing ideas through both written and spoken language, and a boundless curiosity about cultural codes, particularly in mass communication and advertising. My passion for artistic expression first emerged at 13, when I delved into the world of graffiti with some friends. Growing up in Athens, a city renowned for its rich street art scene, significantly fueled my enthusiasm for tagging.
My introduction to graphic design and visual communication began shortly thereafter, with projects involving poster and graphic design for school events, graffiti festivals, and live music performances. After secondary school, I decided to pursue a career in design and attended Vakalo College of Art and Design, Greece’s oldest institution dedicated to graphic arts.
During my studies, I honed my skills in writing, typography, and poster design, while also exploring the broader spectrum of visual arts. Upon earning my Master of Arts, I actively sought opportunities to collaborate with industry professionals, gaining invaluable practical experience and expanding my portfolio.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I prefer not to dwell on the past, particularly its challenges. Instead, I focus on the present, where I have become more mature, stable, and confident. I’ve encountered moments of self-doubt, postponed important goals, and faced criticism from colleagues that felt both unfair and discouraging.
An artistic career is inherently fraught with risks and uncertainties. In the creative industry, calculated risks are essential for fostering innovation and achieving originality. These ventures not only lead to unexpected successes but also provide invaluable lessons along the way. As a graphic designer, particularly as a freelancer, I’ve encountered situations where taking risks was necessary. Each decision involves uncertainty, whether it’s exploring new techniques or navigating uncharted territory. Embracing these challenges has not only fueled my growth but also kept my work dynamic and forward-thinking.
In Greece, labor rights and relations can be particularly challenging due to the economic climate, which presents numerous obstacles and leads to delays and frustration. As a freelance designer, I quickly adapted to a highly competitive industry, learning to uphold the highest standards of integrity, protect my professional reputation, and navigate legal and financial responsibilities. Reflecting on these challenges, I recognize that while they were significant, I am grateful for the knowledge and insights I have gained. These experiences have shaped my ethical approach and cautious mindset, contributing to the person I am today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a graphic designer and art director based in Athens, Greece, with nearly a decade of experience in the field. My expertise covers a range of visual communication materials, including brand identity, editorial design, print advertising, and social media content. By blending creativity with practical experience, I aim to elevate the visibility of individuals, small businesses, and established companies through impactful design solutions.
What distinguishes my work is a particular focus on typography and language. I prioritize simplicity and clarity, ensuring that each design element contributes to a cohesive visual narrative. My goal is to create bold and memorable designs by skillfully balancing words, symbols, and the interplay of shapes and colors. This approach allows my work to leave a lasting impression and effectively communicate its intended message.
One of my proudest achievements is the development and release of Vercetti Regular, an award-winning sans-serif font created in collaboration with type designer Richard Mandona. Launched on September 8, 2022, Vercetti is freely available for personal and commercial use. The process of bringing this project to life, from initial sketches to final refinement, was deeply satisfying. Vercetti Regular has since become a valued resource for the creative community and beyond.
How do you think about luck?
I prefer not to frame my experiences in terms of good or bad luck. As a natural skeptic, I don’t view luck as a capricious force that arbitrarily shifts the odds in one’s favor. Instead, I consider myself fortunate to have had a supportive family that nurtured my independence and conscientious character. The Holy Bible’s saying, “A man reaps what he sows,” resonates with me, highlighting the cause-and-effect relationship that underpins various aspects of life.
While random events can influence personal relationships, I believe that professional success is grounded in self-awareness, self-criticism, and relentless effort. By continually identifying areas for improvement and striving beyond any single achievement, I have cultivated a mindset of persistent work, self-betterment, and thoughtful reflection.
Challenges, especially disappointments from collaborators, have been particularly instructive. These setbacks have strengthened my resolve and deepened my commitment to achieving my personal and professional goals.
