Today we’d like to introduce you to Fabian Alomar
Hi Fabian , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Los Angeles native from Echo Park best known as a professional skateboarder and Latino actor. skateboarding career began in the early ’90s and by 1996 became a professional skateboarder traveling throughout the United States and abroad.
Born into a life of drugs and crime, I faced many challenges and made some bad choices along the way. But skateboarding saved my life. It gave me a way out, a new purpose, and a chance to rebuild myself.
I’ve been to jail and prison, I’ve faced homelessness, and I’ve struggled with drug addiction. But through it all, I never lost hope. In Pelican Bay State Prison, I had a wake-up call. I realized that I deserved more and that I was capable of more. I took college courses, got certificates, and started working on myself. Thanks to the support of organizations like ARC and outstanding individuals like Scott Budnick and Elgin James, I found my way back to success. I had the opportunity to act for MAYANS M.C, Flamin’ Hot, and This Fool. Working on other projects that you will see soon.
Today, I am a mentor, a working actor, and a proud member of the Ride Home program with ARC. I never imagined that my life could take such a turn, but here I am, living proof that you can change your destiny no matter where you come from or what obstacles you face. With perseverance, resilience, and the help of others, anything is possible.
I have this saying… “Anyone who is born into a path of gangs, crime, drugs, and prison. You can still turn your life around and live the dream”.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Growing up, I faced a harsh reality from an early age. The area my family grew up in was hit hard by the crack epidemic in the 80s. Growing up, I witnessed the destructive power of gangs that led my father and uncles to prison. With such an environment surrounding me, it seemed almost inevitable that I would fall into the same—dark path. But destiny had a different plan for me. I found solace in skateboarding. It was more than just a sport for me – it was an escape, a way to find joy amidst the chaos of my surroundings. But as I dove deeper into the skateboard culture, I was confronted with a harsh reality: drugs. Before I knew it, addiction had taken hold of my life, leading me down a dark and treacherous path.
My downward spiral eventually led me to prison. There, I had to confront the consequences of my actions and face the impact they had on myself and those around me. It was during those long, solitary nights behind bars that I realized something profound – I had a choice. I could either allow my past mistakes to define me, or I could make a conscious decision to redefine myself, to rise above my circumstances, and create a future that was worth fighting for.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I began to realize that my story could serve as a source of inspiration for others. I saw the potential to use my experiences to mentor young individuals who were at risk of taking a similar path.
One of the initiatives I am proud to be a part of is the ARC ride-home program, The Ride Home Program provides free, safe, and friendly transportation directly from the carceral facility to an approved transitional housing program that will address the individual’s specific needs, almost 3 years ago I took that ride home, an ARC member picked me up upon my release and took me to buy clothing, food, and we took a flight from pelican bay prison to LAX, now I am a ARC ride-home driver Through this program, I have witnessed firsthand the impact small acts of kindness can have on changing someone’s life for the better. I immersed myself in community outreach programs, seeking to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
I am also heavily involved in various community events and initiatives. For the past two years, I have organized a back-to-school drive where we collect backpacks and school supplies to give to children in need. Last year, we were able to distribute 1,000 backpacks filled with supplies, along with haircuts and clothing. Additionally, I have established an annual Thanksgiving giveaway where we aim to feed those who are less fortunate. Last year, we provided meals for 1,000 people, and this year, with the help of my amazing team and sponsors, our goal is to serve 2,000 meals. Witnessing the joy on the faces of those we are able to help brings me immeasurable satisfaction and motivates me to continue making a difference in my community.
But my journey does not stop there. I always say I was struck by lightning twice with Skateboarding and Acting. I’ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to pursue my career in acting. You may recognize me from my roles in the hit TV series “Mayan’s MC” and “This Fool.” These projects have not only allowed me to explore my passion for storytelling, but they have also been a platform for me to share my story and shed light on the issues of addiction, incarceration, and redemption.
One particular project that holds great significance for me is the film “Flamin Hot,” directed by the talented Eva Longoria. This film tells the inspiring true story of Richard Montañez, a Mexican-American janitor who went on to invent Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. It is a story that celebrates the triumphs of the Hispanic community and underscores the importance of perseverance and the pursuit of education.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I want to share with you today the core message that education is the key to unlocking doors of opportunity and achieving the life you envision for yourself. No matter what obstacles or setbacks you may face, never underestimate the power of knowledge and the transformative impact it can have on your life.
let us not forget the struggles, triumphs, and contributions of the Latino community. Let us strive to uplift one another, celebrate our roots, and embrace the diversity that enriches our nation. Together, we can create a future where our heritage is celebrated, our voices are heard, and our dreams are realized.
