Daily Inspiration: Meet Erik Jon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erik Jon.

Hi Erik, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been passionate about hair, so right after high school, I chose cosmetology school over a traditional college path. After graduating, I moved to San Diego and worked at a few salons across Southern California before eventually relocating to Los Angeles. That’s where I really got the training that gave me the confidence and a strong skill set to lean on which I had always wanted.
After taking clients on my own, I was working at a salon in Beverly Hills and feeling a bit disheartened—like I had done the work but wasn’t getting the recognition. Then I got a DM from Tracey Cunningham, inviting me to interview for her new salon in the Waldorf Astoria. Luckily I was chosen! That was a huge turning point for me. From there I joined Ramirez Tran for three years. During covid era I left Ramriez Tran for so many reasons then worked at 454 North for a few years and I’m currently based out of Sally Hershberger LA!

Over the years, I’ve built a strong, diverse clientele in salon as well as expanding into editorial work— campaigns, magazine covers, and working with brands like K-18, Unite, and T3!

I’m proud of how far I’ve come so far. From very humble beginnings of being adopted + raised in a loving home to now as an adult making my dreams a reality. Knowing that I’m still young and have many more exciting career moments coming is very motivating and exciting. I plan to continue making a big impact and name for myself in the beauty industry!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey hasn’t been made without many challenges… I’ve faced numerous difficult situations. However, each obstacle has taught me resilience and helped me grow stronger. In this industry competition is inevitable but I’ve always chosen to stay true to myself and focus on my own path. I believe that integrity and authenticity lead to lasting success. While others may seek quick wins through less honorable means, I trust that what’s meant for me will come in due time and nothing can stop that from happening, even if it comes in a roundabout way. You must remember that setbacks are always temporary, perseverance will always pave the way forward to your goals!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in great haircuts and have spent a lot of time to really understand what I’m doing. I’m confident behind the chair which is important. I am well known for my blunt bobs, usually very short and so fun to perfect. Truly blended layers that compliment the natural flow of the hair. As well as fixing the shape of an unpleasant haircut.. it’s like putting a puzzle together and it’s really rewarding to see it grow out long and healthy.
What makes my work stand out is that I’m consistent. If your hair doesn’t look nice air-dried or after some quick styling, then it’s just not that great of a cut. It’s all about the shape.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Taking risks is part of life. You don’t to stay comfortable too long. Moving out here at 21 was bold but after a lot of hard times it panned out into something amazing.. Sometimes one choice can change everything. Even if it doesn’t go how you hoped you still learn something from it. I think it’s always worth taking a risk when it makes sense to you, even if it doesn’t to others!
