Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Emmet.
Hi Dylan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m an artist, songwriter, and producer based between Upstate New York and Los Angeles. Music has always been a part of my life. I grew up in musical theatre and played drums, and I started playing guitar at 13. I’ve been writing songs ever since. During college, I had a band and began producing records for us and my friends out of my parent’s basement. After college, I moved to LA to expand my network and dive deeper into the music business. I spent four years there before learning, quite unexpectedly, that I had a daughter back in New York. I decided to move back to my hometown to be with her, and since then, I’ve maintained a bi-coastal work life, spending weeks at a time in LA for writing trips. Social media has played a big role in my journey, helping me connect with collaborators, while tools like Zoom allow me to keep the music flowing with remote sessions. It’s been a wild ride to say the least
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The music business is tough, plain and simple. It’s hard enough to get a song cut with an artist, let alone figure out how to make a sustainable living doing it. Having to leave LA unexpectedly was a huge shift for me, and there have been many points in my career where navigating the next step felt really unclear. On top of that, the industry is constantly evolving—the business model seems to change every few years. I’ve seen so many friends, including myself, have to reinvent our careers again and again. Whether it was the impact of COVID or the rise of TikTok reshaping how music is discovered, there’s always something new to adapt to. So no, it hasn’t been a smooth road. But I genuinely love what I do, and that love keeps me going. For me, making music is worth the fight.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a songwriter and producer. For my artist project, I write and produce all the songs myself, occasionally bringing in a collaborator to help but for the most part, it’s just me. I love creating for other artists just as much. I work across a range of genres—mostly under the umbrella of pop, but also branching into rock, pop punk, and electronic.
What I’m most proud of is the art I’ve made. As my catalog continues to grow, so does my appreciation for each song. Every one of them represents a moment in time—an experience, an emotion—that we were able to capture. It’s incredibly fulfilling to look back and see those moments preserved in music. I’m especially proud of the work my friends and I have put out into the world together and the stories we’ve told through our songs.
What sets me apart is my ability to wear multiple hats in the studio. A lot of people tend to focus on just writing or just producing—but I do both, and I also understand what it’s like to be in the artist’s shoes. That perspective helps me bring other people’s visions to life. I’m also really good at creating a comfortable, open space where people feel safe enough to be honest. Songwriting is often about digging deep to find the truth, and I love having those real conversations that lead to something meaningful and true coming out in the music.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Making music truly makes me happy. I feel incredibly grateful that I get to do this for a living—it gives me purpose and the motivation to keep pushing through whatever obstacles come my way.
That said, my real center is my daughter and my fiancée. For a long time, I was probably a little too career-focused, but becoming a father and building a life with my partner has shifted my perspective in the best way. I’ve come to realize that it’s the little moments with them that matter most. Spending time with my girls makes me feel whole and fulfilled. Love, in general, is what makes me happiest—being able to bring joy to them, watching my daughter grow, and sharing everyday moments together has brought me more genuine happiness than I ever could’ve imagined.
