Daily Inspiration: Meet Donald Whitehead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donald Whitehead

Hi Donald, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my work as a volunteer as part of a program to treat people with substance abuse issues. I volunteered for 6 months and was then hired. I went through several position over the next few years. In 2001 I was hired as Executive Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless. I worked in that role for 3 years before leaving to become a consultant and services provide. I returned 16 years later to resume my role as Executive Director in 2020. I have been in my my role since then.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road has been littered with obstacles and barriers. I have lost two daughters my father, my mother, all four grand parents and many other relatives and friend. Each loss takes a little out of you. We have always faced an uphill battle when it comes to raising money for advocacy. Recently the sentiment towards people experiencing homeless has changed to a less compassionate more punitive approach and this transition makes it much harder for people experiencing homeless to make progress for housing jobs and stability.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actor, comedian and songwriter. I have appeared in 6 movies, numerous commercials and won a regional Emmy for my work. I have written two books and produced a song to memorialize the death of my youngest daughter. I think what sets me apart is my versatility and the ability to provide meaningful work with part-time input. Although performing is my love. Homeless advocacy is my ministry!

What makes you happy?
My family is the most important thing in my life. Helping to assist someone in need also makes me happy.
