Today we’d like to introduce you to Dini Avila
Hi Dini, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My family immigrated here when I was 5 and they had a Chinese restaurant and they still own it today… more than 30 years. So I grew up around small business was owners, but I was encouraged to take the safe route, go to college so I can get a “good” job at an office. I did that and still work as a Sales Manager at Farmers Insurance. I like my job, but I’ve never found joy in it. Fast forward a few years, I met my husband, got married, bought a house and had 2 kids. Personally I had hit my “goals” but professionally life was still lacking and I was still looking for my professional joy.
One night while Pinterest scrolling, I saw a video on bubble houses and looked for a company in my area and didn’t find one. Did my research and approached my husband with my crazy idea. He surprised me by saying that he thought it was a great idea. Now a year later I’ve been to balloon classes and we own 20+ inflatable units and we are the vendor for events like the Simi Valley street fair.
We are still figuring things out because I recently was hospitalized for a tear in an artery in my heart a condition called SCAD. This condition limits my physical activity.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My main challenge is my health. Heart condition really changes the pace I’m able to work. I can’t lift more than 10 lbs. which includes my toddler. Heat is a challenge for me and causes chest pain. Unfortunately the treatment is rest and let my body heal on its own. My business was finally getting some traction and then I end up in the hospital.
As I’m sure any working mother can tell you, balancing time for your children, husband, family, pets, work, yourself… etc. is forever challenging. I really think of it as work life choices, because really you can’t balance it all. I have the capacity to juggle a few things at once, but quality suffers. So now I make a choice to focus on one or two things and give my self grace to let the other things figure out themselves.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We rent inflatables and balloon decorations. We specialize in bubble houses and have curated a collection of inflatables that are fun and beautiful. I’m starting to focus on growing the balloon decor portion of my business because of my new health challenges.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that Simi Valley has a little town feel but we are not too far away from everything else.
