Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetri Thomas.
Hi Demetri, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, I’ve been singing since the age of two. But seriously, I started as a child actor in commercials and television. After the death of my Father from Lung Cancer at age 10, my mother got me involved with music and voice lessons with renowned voice coach, Richard Loring, who worked with a lot of the old greats like Johnny Matthis. I learned voice and interpretation of song as well as because of being fatherless, I was mentored by him and learned a lot about just how to be a professional in this tough business of music and show business. After graduating from Beverly Hills High School and being very involved there in the performing arts department, I then decided to dedicate my life to singing and writing songs. I would lock myself in my room and study my favorite recording artists by listening to their records, and tried to come up with new lyrics and melodies of the same quality. The process of learning how to write one song after another helped me to be proficient at the craft. And somehow, I became a good songwriter. I worked with different producers over the years and they would all challenge me to come out of my comfort zone and raise the bar on my writing by studying artists who were better than me. The continuous process of never being satisfied with where I was as an artist helped me to become better at what I loved to do. Then one day in my early thirties, I started writing Country-pop songs out of nowhere, just by osmosis. I couldn’t figure out how this was happening, but I figured it was meant to be so I just kept on doing it. Thus, today, I’m a Country-Pop singer and songwriter and I truly enjoy it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Over the years, I went through a personal transformation of healing and growth. As you may know, the death of a Father at age 10 can be extremely traumatic. Those deep feelings of abandonment had a huge impact on my life. But one of my songs “When You Believe” which I wrote in my twenties, describes so well my personal goal of inner wholeness that I was so desperately trying to attain. Through my personal faith in God, as an Orthodox Christian and from treatment in therapy I grew by leaps and bounds and was ready to commit fully to this life of music and live healthily in all my personal relationships. Don’t get me wrong, I made a lot of mistakes along the way. But from all the lessons, learned, I finally became the healthy well adjusted person I was created to be. I thank my late mother, Elaine for her abiding love and never giving up on me and for bringing me to where I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m most known for my song “My Daddy’ s From Texas”. Being Greek, I wanted people to know why I’m a Country-Pop singer.
My Father, the late Jimmie Thomas was an oil engineer from Port Arthur, Texas. He used to take me to work with him when I was just a little boy to examine all the oil wells in Los Angeles County as the Deputy Assessor. I had such fond memories of him, I had to write a song about it. I’m proud of the video I shot for the song as well. I’m also known for such songs as “You Are My Destiny” which I recorded with well known singer Shannon Rae and “Time to Decide” which will ultimately be the title of my newly released EP coming soon. You can see the video for the song I shot at The Viper Room. All these songs and more you can find on Spotify, iTunes and check out all the videos on my YouTube Channel as well. My songs are melodic, catchy and most of all, they say something and have a good message. That’s what sets me apart.
Any big plans?
Well, I’m definitely Nashville bound. I plan to broaden my horizons over there by performing at some cool venues and meeting some new and fresh writers to add to my repertoire. I’ve got a few shows in Hollywood planned for the beginning of the year. I’m looking forward to growing as an artist and songwriter, sharpening my skills and get even better. I’m even going to be trying my hand at a little acting, so stay tuned for that,
