Today we’d like to introduce you to Delanie Fischer
Hi Delanie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was first published in elementary school for a poem I wrote about globes (in the local paper), so I guess I was always a writer at heart, but I got my start as a performer. I did stand-up for many years at clubs, theatres, festivals, and on TV. This led to other opportunities like small acting roles and writing a feature-length film for a network. Now, my writing experience includes everything from jokes and short and long-form scripts, to wedding ceremonies, campaign slogans, and marketing copy. Writing a book was always on my bucket list, so I was thrilled when that opportunity presented itself. The book I co-authored, MockTales, just launched! It includes 50+ literary-inspired alcohol-free and plant-based mocktail recipes like Oliver Lemon Twist, Moby Sip, Rubyfruit Jungle Juice, Huckleberry Fizz, Little Women, Big Gimlet, The Brave New World Old Fashioned, Are You There Goblet? It’s Me, Margaret., and much more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle has been a shift in identity from performer to writer, which is a transition I made based on how I actually want to live vs. how I was forcing myself to live. The lifestyle and day-to-day I enjoy most is working from home, having a flexible schedule, and creating on my own terms—mostly writing and podcasting. I’ve struggled with the thoughts that I should be out there “doing more,” because I used to be out every night grinding with stand-up, auditioning all over Los Angeles, and juggling a ton of different entertainment-related projects at once (often on top of a corporate day job). Burnout, stress, and overwhelm was kind of my norm, so I can catch myself feeling guilty for enjoying my time and having spaciousness in my life. When you get used to running on adrenaline, it can feel weird to have peace. So, I used to consider myself a performer who also writes, now I consider myself a writer who has performed their own stuff. It’s not as shiny of an identity to the public, but it’s what’s made me the happiest.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the host of a top-rated podcast, Self-Helpless, co-author of MockTales (the first-ever alcohol-free and plant-based mocktail book of its kind), and creative activist who has been featured on NBC, FOX, Lifetime, Netflix, Hulu, Fuse, Vh1, Entrepreneur, PopSugar, Podcast Magazine, theSkimm, and Bustle. With a background in stand-up, script writing, and production, I’m passionate about leveraging humor to advocate for social change—whether via a personal growth podcast, writing a book that encourages conscious consumption, or producing print and video projects that benefit people, animals, and the planet.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
