Today we’d like to introduce you to DC Barker.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always noticed I was pretty good with taking photos and using photoshop. I went through a depression period in 2017.
In 2018, I purchased a new Canon camera and I started photography with my 4 children to help lift me up. I practiced outdoors with my children as my models. Eventually, I moved my business into my home as I began to pick up clientele. I did photography out of my home for 2 years.
I secured my first location in 2020. I began to travel with my craft and build clientele all over. Today, I am in the process of relocating to Atlanta, GA to continue to grow my photography and videography business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve suffered a number of losses along the way. I’m a single mother so there have been a lot of long nights of not having enough balance. In 2015, when I purchased the very first camera I gave birth to my youngest son. When I had him I didn’t have a job, which means I had no income so times were hard.
As much as I wanted to continue photography, I had to sell my camera for $900 to help my family. With no camera, I still would study and research photography techniques to use once I saved enough money to get a new camera. Finally, in 2018, I was able to buy a new camera. In 2019, I struggled to find affordable photography space so I began working in my home.
This was a struggle because I couldn’t take in the clientele flow I would’ve liked because I had to be careful with allowing everyone in my home. I’ve broken and lost important memory cards, I’ve had lights give out on me in the middle of sessions, and I’ve had COVID twice.
I’ve had unsatisfied customers and I’ve been hit with a lot of the unexpected but I’ve never given up.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer. I wouldn’t say, I specialize in any specific area of portrait photography. I love it all!
I’m known for being creative and standing out with my craft. I’ve created some pretty cool setups and have perfected my craft along the way. I would say I’m most proud of securing my first location, that was a huge accomplishment for me.
My creative vision and my ambition are what sets me apart from others. I believe I was given a gift.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to never give up and always keep a humble heart.
I’ve also learned that no one has it all figured out. All greats have been through some of the roughest times in order to be where they are not and have learned through the process.
