Daily Inspiration: Meet Dani Bell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dani Bell.

Hi Dani, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Dani Bell, I’m a musician currently residing in San Diego. I love long walks on the beach and David Hasselhoff, but who doesn’t? I’m in a few musical projects – Boychick, Dani Bell & The Tarantist, and an 8 piece all girl Kate Bush tribute band called Baby Bushka.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think I could say the road was smooth. Even when things seem to be going well, there has been a constant effort to try to keep the momentum. I’ve heard the saying “being in a band is like being in a relationship” and it’s absolutely true.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I write music and perform in an indie pop group called “Boychick” and my main project “Dani Bell & The Tarantist”. I also play bass in a Kate Bush cover band called “Baby Bushka”. I’m proud of the songs I’ve written so far. Writing excites me, especially when I come up with a chord progression or melody that sparks inspiration. The couple festivals we’ve played have been highlights too, getting to play a show in front of a new kind of audience and seeing your name on a flyer with other bands that you look up to. It’s a trip.

The most blatant thing that sets Dani Bell & The Tarantist apart is that we wear Venetian inspired masks on stage.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
So many people I’d have to thank but to list a few – I have to thank my parents for being supportive and encouraging of my desire to make music. My dad got me my first guitar and a little eight-track recorder to make demos on (it’s called a Boss micro br80, and I still record my demos on it!). Al Howard connected me with a lot of great musicians and people in the music scene. He paid for the production of our first album out of pocket. He’s definitely responsible for getting me moving.

Gotta thank my boyfriend, Tim Lowman, for being my roadie, muse, life coach, etc.

My friends for being so supportive, I know I could always look to them for advice. My buddy Ray Pitstick who is at nearly every show with his camera, and he’s always down to share his opinions and tell it how it is.

I have a few musical mentors, but Portugal. The man has been such a big influence of mine. They inspire me so much, not only with their music but with their activism. I’ll forever be stoked that their lead singer, John, did the art for the second Dani Bell & The Tarantist album.

Last but not least, my bandmates. Each of the projects I’m involved in wouldn’t be the same without them and all the hard work everyone puts in.
