Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey McCartney.
Hi Corey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I actually did my first production, a music video in 2010. It was for a rapper in St. Louis. I then didn’t do anything with production for a few years. I lived in Los Angeles for about six years. Nearly every day, I was asked if I worked in the entertainment industry and the answer was no. In 2012 is when I took a job there that didn’t involve Entertainment, which is why I was living in the city. After about four years, I decided to start dabbling in entertainment, and I started taking acting classes. I began studying a technique called Meisner, and then I also started doing scene study classes. I then had an opportunity to accept a different job in Kansas City, in Kansas City is where I started transitioning from an actor to a producer. Although I still do a fair amount of acting as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
FaceKC, my nonprofit, faces tough issues through film, art, and music. With tough types of subject matter, dealing with people from all along the political spectrum, various demographics including various races, ages, and sexual orientations. There have definitely been some obstacles and confusion on what our mission is. We sometimes get accused of supporting one side or another when in reality all we’re trying to do is bridge gaps and breakdown barriers.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a film producer with AGA productions as well as the cofounder of 501 C3 FaceKC USA… filmmakers, artists, creatives, for empowerment. I specialize in synergy. Breaking down barriers and bridging gaps between communities as well as keeping everyone on the same page on a film set. Most proud of the work that we have done through Face KC in the Kansas City community, especially when it comes to reducing potential gun violence. What sets us apart is our approach to filmmaking through the nonprofit which involves pairing together groups of people that wouldn’t work together otherwise. Those groups of people would then engage each other through the arts.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Outside of producing and production management, I’m also an actor under stage name Taron Mac.
