Today we’d like to introduce you to Consuelo Evans
Hi Consuelo, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello, My name is Consuelo Evans, and I am the founder of Hub City Autism Network also known as Hub CAN. We are a grassroots nonprofit 501(c)3, parent-led organization working to improve the quality of life for autism families. My story began in 2005. My son, Jasper, was 2 1/2 years old when I first noticed he had stopped talking. His diagnosis was later confirmed as autism spectrum disorder. I remember feeling alone. However, after I came out from under my cloud of despair, I began to educate myself. I began to read books, search the internet and attend educational workshops on the topic of autism. I became a Certified Parent Advocate/Mentor. I then felt a desire to uplift other parents and provide a welcoming fun environment for families to enjoy themselves without judgement. This is the reason in 2009 I founded Hub City Autism Network. HubCAN offers Education Workshops, Autism Swim Club & Back-to-School Event, Skateboard Clinics, Annual Steppin 4 Autism (Autism Awareness Month Acceptance Walk), Adaptive Sip & Paint, Parent Support Meetings, Adaptive Social & Recreational Activities (Bowling, Nature Walks, Art & Crafts, etc.), an Annual Christmas Party/Toy giveaway and more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Consistent revenue and grant funding is the #1 challenge as all HubCan events and activities are offered free to participants and families. However, as with many small non-profit organizations, additional challenges can include, expanding outreach to increase the capacity to serve our intended population, bilingual staff needs, increased donor retention, improving donor experiences and engagement, ensuring that current technology is available, and the ongoing need to automate processes to ensure compliance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
HubCAN has had a direct impact on over 5000 individuals in Southern California. We offer sibling inclusion at all social /recreation activities.
HubCAN’s mission is to improve the quality life for families with children on the autism spectrum by offering Adaptive Recreational, Arts and Sports activities for youth along with Family-centered educational and therapeutic programs.
HubCAN’s Vision is to Provide children on the spectrum and their families with pathways and resources to be fully included and integrated in a community that provides “safe spaces” where they can participate and be accepted without being judged, while sharing experiences and activities that result in learning and appreciation for all!
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I have tried to leave the organization several times, but my love and passion for HubCAN wins every time.
