Daily Inspiration: Meet Coco Perez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Coco Perez.

Coco Perez

Coco, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My origin story began when I was a little girl. Who enjoys the love of animation and a very funny dad who was a local comedian. When I was 10 years old, I used to watch the George Lopez. Back then, my father forbade me from watching that show because it wasn’t kid-friendly. Of course, like most kids, I disobey my father and start watching the TV show. My favorite catchphrase to this day is “Esta Loco tu.” I started doing comedy at the age of 26, all thanks to my bosses, whose names are Ryan and Angelina. I started making them laugh when I first started working at Boudin. Angelina was like, “You should do comedian because you’re funny.” My first open mic was at the Blarney Stone. On the first night, granted, I was very nervous. Thank god the amazing liquid courage called Alcohol washed away all the nervousness away from me. When people clapped for me, I asked them to chant my name, and it felt good. My first joke was talking sh*t about my toxic ex, small wee wee, and my crappy job I had at the Pier 39. The crowd laughed at it, and the cheers were loud and wonderful. From there I fall in love with the world of comedy and show business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the book, I recently read “Comedy Book: How Comedy Conquered Culture–and the Magic That Makes It Work” by Jesse David Fox. There is a quote that I love the most, and it goes like this: “Comedians are sad clowns.” The reason why we do stand up and talk about our family lifestyle is to relate with us and to bring joy and laughter to the world. I didn’t have a good childhood growing up. Each and every day there’s always drama between my parents. Especially when it comes to my mother, who cares about herself and never really cares how I feel my dad or my brother. The only she ever showed affection is when her relatives came around. It’s almost like being in a TV show where my mother pretends to be this loving mother. But behind closed doors, she was a very bad mother who was selfish, narcissistic, and very abusive. My father’s relationship wasn’t so bad. I love my Papa Bear more than anything in this world. But he can be strict at times, be an outsider, and never really fit in. As a 10-year-old, I was the bully because things at home were complicated because of my mother. I stopped when I was in middle school because I realized I was being selfish and not caring about my dad’s needs. He worked long hours at a grocery store to get us food and clothes this is not the way to repay him. As a 12-year-old, I had matured by a little. Will Rogers was a tough middle school that’s where all the bad kids go. High school was a hell hole, the worst 4 years of my life. Then again, most people never like their high school days. I understand why. Who wants to remember the place that brings them misery? Nobody. Back in my high school years, I wasn’t popular, the star athlete, and not even the smart kid. I was the girl with a learning disability and the basic emo chick as well. Who enjoys listening to rock bands such as Black Veil Brides, Killswitch Engage, and Flyleaf. Oh yeah, I was that dark. For someone who was dark with a twisted sense of humor. I did try to have good grades and the best attendance. I wasn’t a bad student; in fact, my teachers loved me because I was quiet and didn’t cause any trouble for them. I got my diploma from high school all 4 years of hell.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I was admired by life. Can actually be funny, if overlook the dark and grey shade of life. You can find the humor in it. I write down my jokes on my notebook. According to my co-workers, I am known for my sarcasm and dark, twisted humor.

Right now, I’m not doing any open mics due to school, But I would appreciate people following me on Instagram, which is @ciellover_12. Don’t worry; I’ll keep you guys updated on my next show.

I am proud of the fact that I got to perform on Improv at San Jose. Sadly, I was disqualified for taking a selfie.

I am very down-to-earth, funny, and fun to be around with. Plus, I believe in positivity and forming a good friendship. Also, I’m an animal lover as well.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I would thank Papa Bear, Lauren Black, Nicole Bradshaw, Christopher Hope, Angelina, and Ryan. For always believing in my dreams.
