Daily Inspiration: Meet Christina Bernal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Bernal.

Hi Christina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi! I’m Christina and my Husband and I created 1984 Vintage and 1984 Horror.

The shop is a vintage experience mixing fashion & decor with a mini video store specializing in classic horror and slasher movies. We want to create a feeling of being in an 80s slasher movie…an amazing soundtrack playing, great clothes and the ever-present sense of suspense! Just like a great 80’s slasher flick!

I do all the vintage buying/curating in the shop and my Husband Dave curates the horror tees and VHS movies. We live in the city of San Fernando and love the fact that our shop is here too! San Fernando is kind of a vintage town that is great for filming. Many movies have used our city, so if you haven’t been here yet come down and check out our local breweries and cool shops on our block!

We started 1984 Vintage & 1984 Horror because we’re both 80s Valley! Kids and being a teen in the 80s was a special time, no cell phones, no social media just a skateboard and the bus and the mall! And regular TV, no movies streaming you had to race to the video store to try and rent a copy of the latest movie.

Dave is a bit of a Horror movie aficionado and started watching them as a kid. I’ve been a “thrifter” and collector for many years and our home and lifestyle reflect that. We hope we can take you back in time and get you excited or at least curious about vintage fashion, the technology of the past, music or anything in our shop that might inspire you!

We look forward to seeing you in the shop!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing is easy when starting a business but create a great team and support group of people you can count on for help or even just advice. There is always going to be struggles and ups and downs. Foot traffic is one that is always a struggle.

I like to work with other local businesses to help promote each other, collaborating is a great way to create some energy and gain foot traffic and followers.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in curating vintage and fashion design.

I shop high and low for the best vintage pieces from the decades. I love good fabric and love to find pieces that are silk, velvet, crepe, leather and beautiful prints and colors. I love a great silhouette, I used to make patterns and love to see some nice pattern work in the pieces I carry.

I used to have my own line and I hope to bring it back and carry some small runs of a collection.

I’m most proud of the space I’ve created that welcomes everyone! And the friends I’ve met along the way.

My eye for rich color, eclectic styles and fabric is what sets me apart from others.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
It may be surprising that this is my third business. My Cousin and I owned a boutique in Pasadena and I had a fashion business in Downtown LA.
