Daily Inspiration: Meet Chris Serrano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Serrano.

Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started designing when I was very young, about 10 or 11 years old, I was fascinated with my Mom’s accessories I always play with them and extra accessorized myself. I started upcycling her Old belts, Jewelry and single earrings, I made them into wild rings and crazy necklaces my family will look at me like if I was from another planet, my ideas were always unusual. My friends at school will go crazy for them and ask me to make them one so I started making them for me and for my friends, I will wear them and will always get looks and smiles.

When I got older I started working for other designers using my designs for their lines but I needed that freedom to always go farther with the piece I was making until I decided to start this on my own. I open my Esty shop and started to list my designs, I was surprised with the responses of my customers, they loved my pieces, I was approached by a few fashion show promoters and that’s how I got my first official fashion show as a designer,

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not easy, I had to work really hard to find customers that will like my pieces, I used to do flea markets, festivals and pop-up shops but people will stop at my booth look at my designs liked it was something pretty but from another world, they will look at me and ask me what are they? I had to explain to them that it was jewelry but unique and different, it took a long time for me to find the right platform where to show them and sell them.

I did struggle to be able to keep working on something I’m passionate about because I had to keep my day job to be able to keep going and I work at night on my designs, there was a lot of times where I thought I had to quit because I didn’t know if I would be able to succeed doing what I love.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I design and make edgy one of a kind jewelry and accessories, I’m known for making extravagant masks, crowns, body pieces and claws with my own touch. I’m proud of all my pieces, I know they all are the perfect piece for someone that will love them. when I make a piece, I always find a way to make it my own, something unique and I have to love it before I send it to someone else.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
There is a lot of competition on what I do, I have to work hard every single day to show that I’m different, but I still find people that will not like My work, I used to feel bad about it and think if I was actually good at this and try to better myself every single time but now I know that not everyone will like what you do no matter how hard you work on it.
