Daily Inspiration: Meet Chris Burnett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Burnett.

Chris, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Los Angeles into a very creative family. I’ve been drawing and painting ever since I was a kid until I found Graphic Design in high school. After obtaining a BFA from CalArts, I began working professionally for large corporations and smaller boutique agencies.

It wasn’t until I went freelance that I really found my stride. My clients include artists and companies in the music industry, news and media outlets, and more.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The bumps are there for a reason, to make us stronger and more resilient. So yea, it’s been challenging. Challenging to maintain a consistent workflow. Challenging to self-promote in the age of social media, where everyone’s voice is over-amplified. Challenging to be financially responsible for myself without the security of a full-time job. Challenging to always make better work, day in and day out. Challenging to maintain multiple creative pursuits all at once. Challenging to not be insecure and compare myself to the success of others. At the end of the day, everything is a challenge, but as long as you’re up for it, you can make it enjoyable.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love to collage by hand. Most of my professional work is done on the computer, so it’s nice to make work outside of that context and connect with my creativity in a physical way. I’m currently finishing a series of larger works on canvas that explore our relationship to the internet. Would ultimately love a solo show at a gallery somewhere in LA this year, so just waiting for the right opportunity.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’m pretty independent these days, but luckily I have a very talented group of friends that I met back in Portland, OR. We all either worked at or around the orbit of Nike. We’ve since all moved on to pursue our own paths but constantly stay in touch. It’s rather motivating because if one of us does something epic, we all feel the need to step up and follow suit. I couldn’t have asked for a better group creative circle.
