Today we’d like to introduce you to Celeste Marquez
Hi Celeste, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Currently, I work as a Video Editor at Getty Images, where I’m granted backstage access to the glitz and glam of Hollywood red carpets, award shows and movie premieres.
My role comes with its share of pressure, especially when faced with tight deadlines. But, the exhilaration of being part of these events outweighs any stress. One standout experience includes my recent work at the Vanity Fair Oscar Afterparty.
In past positions, I’ve worked on all aspects of post-production, including sound design, assembly editing, graphics, and special effects for feature films, viral Youtube channels, day time talk shows, and children’s television. The journey of a video editor has led me down interesting and unexpected paths, a career that younger me could only have dreamed of.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being able to do creative work full-time has been so rewarding, but it took a lot of hard work to get to this point. Starting from the ground up, my passion for the entertainment industry began in middle school, leading me through film school during high school and college. Throughout those years, I dedicated myself to unpaid work, internships, and networking, all while refining my craft. Post-college, I seized every opportunity in video editing until landing a full-time Junior Video Editor position.
By this time, I had already spent four years in my career, making lateral moves. However, through perseverance and dedication, I earned a promotion and eventually secured a position at Getty Images.
Although slowly working my way up the ladder was not the “dream” I always imagined, it eventually got me to where I’m at today, working full-time as a video editor at a job I love.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My favorite part about being a creative is that my work truly fuels me. An editor’s job is to take all the mismatched puzzle pieces and connect them together to form a full picture. On the outside, working on an edit can seem tedious and repetitive but that is where I thrive. I enjoy the process of transforming individual elements into a unified vision through my editing, music selection, sound design, and special effects, and witnessing a project come to life.
I’ve always believe that your finest work emerges from projects you are truly passionate about. I’ve found that dedication and love poured into a project is reflected in the final product. Not everyone can say they love what they do and everyday I am grateful to be one of those people.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
In my experience, I’ve found that the most important qualities are the most basic. These attributes aren’t based on talent, formal education, or influential connections. They’re traits anyone can have, but not everyone has really mastered them.
Be resourceful – When faced with a task you’re unfamiliar with, use the opportunity to problem-solve and learn. Showing initiative and confidence in tackling new challenges has consistently proven invaluable in my career – even if I’m figuring it out as I go. Embrace every challenge as a chance to learn and don’t be afraid to put in the work.
Prioritize self-improvement – Approach each new experience with an open mind and be ready to learn from unexpected places. Aim to be a better version of yourself every year, both at work and in your personal life. The more well-rounded you are, the more you bring to the table. In a world that’s always changing, staying still just isn’t an option. Keep pushing yourself to grow and adapt.
And the last quality is the most simple.
Pay attention – Notice the little things, what your bosses need, gaps in the company – then figure out where you can fit in. By taking the initiative to address these needs, you show that you’re proactive and ready to step up. That’s how you stand out from the crowd.
