Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Mensing.
Hi Casey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was born in a town called Breese, not far from the banks of the Mississippi. I’ve spent some time in Arizona, Florida, and Tennessee. I started writing and making art in my teens while living in Florida. Began by writing poetry and making collages. That grew into fiction and abstract paintings. My first book of poetry was published while I was living in Honolulu, Hawaii, and after four years there, I ended up in L.A. I started writing screenplays when I got here because when in Rome… Most of my time is spent writing, painting, taking photos, and giving a home to stray books.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My two long-term challenges are focus and self-doubt. Like any creative, I struggle with the concept of the worth of what I create. When I was younger, I held the belief that everything I did was great. As time passed, my inner critic developed. I’m better at being objective about my work, but now I have trouble predicting the response of others to what I put out into the world. I’ve always had trouble focusing on a single idea or plan, which is why I work on several things and in multiple disciplines, often on the same day.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In essence, I create with words, paint, images, and objects. I’m most known as a writer, having won dozens of screenwriting awards and published a few books. I’ve delved more into visual art these last few years, mainly focusing on painting and collage. When I’m restless, I’ll pick an area of the city and wander around taking photos.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like most about living in Los Angeles is the diversity. Both in people and places. Every part of the city has its own vibe and sub-culture. Much like other major cities, it’s got an everything-in-one-place thing going, which means it’s hard to feel bored or uninspired living here.
My one real complaint about L.A. is the ever-increasing cost of living and the growing poverty and homelessness as a result, which no one seems to want to address in any meaningful way.
