Daily Inspiration: Meet Carrie Ng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Ng

Hi Carrie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Guangzhou, China. I move around alot as a child. From Hong Kong, to Mexico, to finally Los Angeles. I discovered graphic design in Arcadia High School as one of my elective classes. My dad was a painter when he was younger, so naturally I gravitated towards design. I went through PCC to further my portfolio and eventually I transferred to ArtCenter College of Design. Not only did I grow as a designer, but my work ethic is much stronger after attending ArtCenter. I can produce work efficiently and create design that serves a community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. I encountered moments of struggle specifically during my transition from PCC to ArtCenter. My dream school was UCLA, but I forgot to submit the extra portfolio application for the specific Design Media Art Major. So I knew immediately I wasn’t going to get in. However, I think that it is in God’s plan that I end up in ArtCenter because their program and the community are filled with talented people that inspire me everyday.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a graphic designer specializing in UI/UX Design. I am known for my minimalistic and direct approach. I’m most proud of my bachelor’s degree I got recently at ArtCenter. What sets me apart is that I view design as a chance for me to serve the missing needs in communities.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My advice for finding a mentor is not to be afraid to reach out to alumni from your school. Through LinkedIn, you can meet people who have similar connections as you and are willing to have a conversation with you anytime regarding your work and career, and their experiences in your field.
