Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Takagi.
Hi Carolina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a child growing up in big cities, including Houston, Tokyo, and London, I dreamt of living by the ocean with palm trees all around me. Six years ago, I made that dream a reality. I’ve always been more of a visual person. Having moved around so much, the only language that was consistent was my visual interpretation of the outside world and my imagination. You don’t need words to express yourself with imagery.
Initially, I set out to be a photographer. I wanted to do film too, but I didn’t know how. After graduating art school, life threw me a few curve balls and when I eventually decided to pursue my creativity again 6yrs later, I had to juggle staying true to my artistry and earning money to survive. I realized I could fast-track myself to the level of the big names within the industry far quicker as a producer than competing as a photographer, so I followed that path. Now, over a decade after setting up my own production company, Pink Production, initially in London, now also in LA, producing both photography and videos/commercials worldwide, I have finally re-aligned my focus back to my own art and am also directing films.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Where would the fun be in a smooth road? There have definitely been countless obstacles and challenges along the way, and they will continue to present themselves as long as I keep striving forward. They are an essential part of our growth. Each obstacle and challenge is an opportunity, a gift, to do better and be better. The biggest challenge for any artist, I think, is to truly embody belief in your own creativity, regardless of the setbacks you face.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a filmmaker, my role has fluidly merged creative direction, production design, and executive producing, culminating in a holistic perspective to directing. At the core of it, I’m a storyteller. Much of my career has been spent exploring the intersection of art and commerce. Fusing these forces together to create meaningful and impactful visual experiences for audiences that leave a lasting impression. A visual narrative that translates into every language.
Over the past decade, I have brought creative visions to life through the power of storytelling and visual media. Producing films and photography for top fashion and product brands, such as GUCCI, VERSACE, PORSCHE, editorial films alongside print Cover stories and features for mainstream publications including VOGUE, GQ, VANITY FAIR, promotional campaigns for TV shows on NETFLIX and feature films, collaborating with some of the most talented artists and professionals in the industry.
I am passionate about using the essence of creativity to connect people, to provide a voice for the voiceless, and a presence to the unseen through a visual platform. My ultimate purpose is to awaken empathy and conscious thought that resonates with audiences and inspires them to take action.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Every soul I’ve ever come into contact with deserves a certain amount of credit. Every encounter and experience has played its part in my journey and built the foundations of my vision and ever-evolving perspective. It’s a collaborative process. I’m very much a team player. My success is dependent on the strength and unified vision, skill and commitment of my crew, my clients, and my artists.
