Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Ondrasik.
Hi Carla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was raised with an unconventional lifestyle. My dad was a gambler and we lived on Long Island, N.Y. there were times growing up where I had to really think on my feet and take care of myself at a very young age. I used that time to learn life skills and lessons on not only surviving, but surviving strong! I brought those lessons into adulthood and varied career choices. Ultimately, I spent 25 years in music publishing working for some of the best leaders who still remain in the industry today.
The biggest lesson I took away from my childhood was that a mindset of “trying” is a weakened mindset that will only get you “so far” if anywhere at all.
In my music publishing career I represented songwriters and music catalogs placing hit songs with artists like; Christina Aguilera (“Genie In A Bottle”), Cher, Huey Lewis, Earth, Wind and Fire, N’Sync, Martina Mcbride, Mariah Carey, Brenda K. Starr and many others. I use my no-try philosophy in everything I do. One of my greatest success stories is that I discovered, signed and developed my now husband, John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting fame! His music is part of the American songbook, including, “100 Years and Superman.” We have been married for 28 years and share two adult children together.
Which brings me to today! I’ve just written a book entitled, “Stop Trying! The Life Transforming Power of Trying Less and Doing More.” The book was released on Post Hill Press (Simon and Schuster) on September 23rd of this year. It reached #1 on Amazon charts Bestseller in New Releases: Personal Transformation-/ #1 New Release: Self Management Self-Help ebooks and #2 Bestselling Self Management Self-Help eBook.
I’m so proud and excited that I am able to share my message and help to motivated inspire many, many people.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Well, my childhood was both fantastic and full of love and, at times, unpredictable and a bit scary. So that had its challenges.
Getting my book deal came pretty easy because I was prepared for the moment. I had 20 years of research and passion that went into my book. I was introduced to an amazing literary agent and worked with a fantastic editor and was very appreciative to get a (NOT-“polishing” Should be PUBLISHING) deal in a short amount of time.
The struggles were (and still are) the whole social media game. I did not have a strong platform and that is sometimes a make it or break it deal for many of us in the creative field. Be it, music, literary or any of the arts.
I am by nature a “behind the scenes” type of person. In the past, I am the one to push and promote the artist, whereas now I find myself out in front and that is not my most comfortable place to be. But I am learning.
I have struggled with “imposter syndrome” in that I sometimes think to myself, “who am I to be giving all of this advice to other people!” I do remind myself of the powerful feedback I have received and that my message to highlight the negative and deceiving nature of a trying mindset is so powerful to many people. Whether you are young or old, beginning or have found success, there is usually some part of our lives that we struggle with and only offer to “give it a try” because of so.(NO PERIOD AFTER “so.”) many reasons.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve answered a bit of this in previous questions, but I am a former music publishing executive, motivational speaker and (no capital in Author)Author.
I currently specialize in motivating others to go after their dreams and take action- instead of wishing for, hoping for, wanting and trying to make them come true.
I am most proud of being brave enough to leap into the deep end of my dreams and write my current book! I had never written a book before, and not only did I meet the challenge, but I saw it through to completion. I am proud that my children have a living breathing example of what doing and not trying is all about.
What sets me apart from others is that I have a unique approach to success. We’ve all heard the saying from Yoda, “Do or Not Do, There Is No Try,” but until now, nobody has ever asked and answered why? I bring to the forefront the gap between our intentions and our actions.
What’s next?
I am looking forward to taking a break! It has been a manic 2 years for me. Lots of learning and experiencing new things.
But I am looking forward to expanding my speaking platform and sharing this message to many, many more people.
I am considering writing a children’s book because I’d love to encourage a strong doing mindset for those at a very young age.
