Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Lowell.
Caleb, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up outside of a tiny town in Texas. My family had a minifarm with goats, chickens and garden. We didn’t have any tv or internet and I feel like that’s where my imagination really got started. I would pretend elaborate fantasies in the back yard. Epic battles were raged in the barn and the chicken coop. I caught the acting bug when I saw Fidler on the roof I wanted to do that. To be infinite under the stage lights and runaway to other worlds that didn’t feel as small and cramped as mine. I wanted an epic life. I wanted to be different. Bohemian even. My parents were very much against the idea of me prancing about on stage in full makeup and tights but I was anything but stubborn and they eventually agreed to let me be in The Sound Of Music at a local theater. I was over the moon. In my head my journey to stardom had taken its first step. Then came the hitch… my own family aka mom and dad “didn’t have the time” to drive me the 20 minutes to the theater or pick me up after. So I had to find a way. And as I always do and will. I did. I had my first job at a small coffee shop which was in walking distance to the theater (5 miles) so every day I trudged the road to my dream. I kept auditioning and landing roles in plays and before I knew it high school was over. The next step… what even was the next step?? All my life I’d been told a career as an actor was “impossible” sinful even. To live a life to “lie”. That’s was acting was to them. So I gave up, gave in, started applying to business college to do what was expected of me. Or at least what I felt might work because I’d been told college was “impossible” too. But just at the last second a hand reached out to pull me from a life of mundane misery. I started talking to a guy on an online dating app. They didn’t have queer bars where I lived. He revealed that he was a talented agent and could see something special in me. He wanted to help me get a start in acting. Bam! Just like that, the acting journey woke from the dead. I moved to LA and started auditioning, I landed my first major role less that a year later. A tv show on Hulu, called Saint X. In the couple years since I’ve had many ups and downs. It’s a never ending roller coaster this life I wanted. But I’ve been able to get acting jobs here and there, release music and try to grow myself and figure out this puzzle called life. If I’ve learned anything it’s that “the impossible” is just a personal opinion. As humans we’ve been doing it for centuries but never alone. I am so grateful for the souls that have come along side a scared, lonely kid from Texas, took his hand and reassured him that he’s got this, he’s worth it, he has value and if he just sticks to it, big things are right around the corner.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been. BUUUMPY. Covid, Strike, an endless shifting industry and a family that can’t seem to find their way to love me as I am.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an actor, singer, writer, painter and dancer.
I specialize in anything that speaks to my soul. I don’t believe I have to be any one thing. The soul and mind is limitless why should the body.
I’m most proud of those nights in acting class where I became a completely different person or unlocked some deep un disturbed part of me.
What sets me apart. I don’t know actually. I’ve never really thought about what makes me different. I think I see the world in a deep way, I find meaning and beauty in things that most might pass by. I’m curious about life. I have a constantly shifting turmoil inside me that I allow instead of trying to be any one thing or any one person. These days I’m trying to be comfortable in uncertainty and not knowing what’s next.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
My favorite book is really hard as I love so many but I’m reading In Tonges right now by Thomas Grattan and I love to imagine myself as the main character. What would life be like if I were him?
I read a lot of Philosophy and my favorite would probably be A Theory of Everything by Ken Wilber
In The Envelope has been a staple podcast for me for about 3 years now. Backstage interviews very well known and successful actors. It’s so encouraging to hear the common themes and struggles that even A-List actors have.
My favorite app is Pinterest I’m a very visual person so I find myself perusing images and saving the inspirational ones for hours sometimes.
