Today we’d like to introduce you to Buppy.
Hi Buppy., we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began making music when I was 12 years old, inspired by mainly EDM and techno acts. At that time, Twitch streaming had just begun, and I used to make soundtracks for my Twitch streams. I slowly progressed into a lover of many different types of music. Around 14, I found an immense fascination with making rap music. I would write music in my bedroom in Park City, Utah, and then take a bus to Salt Lake City to record it at Red Light Recording Studios. I worked at an ice cream shop to make the money for studio time and spent every check on recording songs.
I would soon find that I didn’t love making rap music, though this trial-and-error process gave me the experience I desperately needed. At 16, I was locked down in my house for the majority of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This allowed me to hone in on the music, and I would find myself spending 10-15 hours a day just learning how to mix, produce, play instruments, etc.
Right before that year ended, I decided to move to LA with little to no idea of how I would make any money or advance in music. I spent most of my time those first months working at a restaurant on Fairfax and seldom had time to make any music. I was pretty bummed. Soon after I quit that job and just hoped the songs would lead me in the right direction. Slowly but surely, I began to see results.
Flashing forward to today, I stayed in LA, and at 20 years old, I’ve amassed a tight-knit audience, played shows around the Western USA, and perfected my craft.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a tumultuous path, to say the least. As I already alluded to, I’ve spent many hours working jobs with pretty poor conditions to just make enough money to pursue music. Aside from that, I lost out on my high-school experience as I left for LA at 16 years old, and I quickly had to grow up or fail trying.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I write, sing, and produce tunes. Originally out of my bedroom, but, luckily I’ve found myself in some amazing rooms across LA throughout the last year. I am most proud of my recent EP, ‘names&places’, which embodies important perspectives from the last few years of my life. Most people know me for my work, ‘Cold Nights In Hollywood’, ‘Open My Letter’, and ‘Hot B!’.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Be yourself; the rest will come. You cannot force relationships but merely put yourself in the right place. The right time has to come, and you have to be ready to receive it. Not all relationships are beneficial despite how they may look on the outside… sometimes, you have to trudge through it alone.
