Daily Inspiration: Meet Brian Metcalf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Metcalf

Hi brian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I moved to Los Angeles, I started out working as a digital artist and storyboard artist. Eventually I worked as a visual effects artist and creative director for interactive menu designs, trailers, posters, web and more. I started directing commercials, music videos and eventually a short film that I wrote. The short got the interest of investors which led to my first feature film. Now my main focus is writing and directing film and TV projects.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been very rough. There have been many disappointments along with false starts with projects that for one reason or another did not happen. I have had to struggle and keep pushing forward to make my projects happen. Other things that deeply affected projects have been the writer and actor strikes and the pandemic.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My specialty is in film and television. I am most known as a writer, director, producer and actor. While I feel that none of my projects have been without compromise I am most proud of my film ADVERSE which starred Mickey Rourke, Lou Diamond Phillips, Sean Astin, Penelope Ann Miller and Thomas Ian Nicholas. The film was distributed by Lionsgate. After that, I am also proud of my TV series UnderDeveloped which was released by Tubi, Amazon, Plex and Cable TV.

While my determination to make a project regardless of how many rejections and other obstacles I receive is something I do, what really sets me apart is my background, the life experiences I have had have shaped how I look at the world and create art.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lessons I’ve learned along the way are to be persistent and to be kind to others. Both can get you far.
