Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Barr.
Hi Brian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
“Feeling swell was at first a simple phrase I used to say to our dad, Billy, while surfing at the Jersey Shore: ‘I’m feeling swell.’ Loving the term, Billy trademarked it, hoping to someday give it meaning.
After a local family’s lives were altered by both Hurricane Sandy and a car accident, we printed the first Feeling Swell shirts and sold them at local Mueller’s Bakery to fundraise for the family. The shirts quickly sold out.
Inspired by both our community’s resilience and a growing need for mental health advocacy, we took action.
My brother Brian and I founded Feeling Swell: a surf brand and community helping everyone connect to the joys and healing powers of the ocean.”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Though its been fun it has certainly been a difficult road. We have spent a lot of time (and run into many headaches) working out our branding, values, and messaging. Its important to us that our brand stands with purpose.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Feeling Swell is run by two brothers- myself (Brian) and my brother Eric. Eric has an incredible creative mind that tends to define our brand’s ethos; I am stronger on the back end with the numbers and business strategy.
