Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Brown
Hi Audrey , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve identified with the arts for as long as I can remember. I would put on plays for my family and managed to always find something to smear on a surface even if that meant the carpet in my room. When I was in high school my mom introduced me to Dia de los Muertos and the calavaras that were associated with the holiday and I recall thinking how beautiful and captivating each one was. I started to really love skeletal art and began painting more and more. High school art classes are the only formal art education I have, the rest has been from exploration, consistency and the desire to push myself as an artist. You could say that drive has been what got me to where I am today all these years later.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well the era of Covid certainly threw a wrench in my plans. I was living in New York and making a film at the time when I got a phone call early in the morning from my director telling me not to get on the subway to report to location. Little did I know that would result in a going on 5 year hiatus from working on set at all. The time away from acting has giving me the gift of working more on my paintings which I wouldn’t trade for anything but I am definitely eager and excited to get back on set and stage.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m primarily an Actor and Painter however, I like to refer to myself as an Artist due to the expansive nature of it all. I find it hard not to involve yourself in other forms for it only provides more enrichment and dimension to your art forms of choice. As a Painter, I am mostly known for my custom Dia de los Muertos inspired skeleton paintings as well as my bold color and textural choices. As an Actor, I would say my background with the Method has given me the tools to portray characters facing the imperfections of life in a natural, truthful and chameleon like manner. Recently I am most proud of hosting my very first solo art show at the 216 Studio Downtown where I sold three original pieces. What sets me apart from others is I am willing to face more challenging subject matters to incorporate in my art for the sake of expanding and challenging my viewers/audiences perspectives.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how waking up at 7 am in Los Angeles actually makes me more productive than tired. I’m always eager to start the day and experience something or somewhere new. Much like New York, every neighborhood is different, stimulating and fun in its own way. It keeps me inspired and curious. What I don’t like is how slow most people tend to walk and stop in the middle of the sidewalk as if there’s no one else behind them. I guess my New York pace is something that will always stay with me.
