Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlyn So
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I learned sewing at the age of 6. My teacher and mentor Alexandria Von Bromssen (Project Runway Season 12 runner-up) taught me to start designing and I have walked on Alexandria’s shows since I was 7. My style is avant garde and couture. I fell in love with fashion ever since and I started to design at home. Everything just happened organically. Kidfash reached out to me when I was 8 and asked me to show my collection to raise funds against bullying. It was so exciting to have someone recognizing my abilities and doing someone good for other kids. It gave me the confidence to start building where I am today. It also aligns so much with my values of combining doing good with fashion. I have since shown my collections in over six shows from Los Angeles and all the way to Paris. I am especially proud to be on the roster of NYFW.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has most definitely not been a smooth road, There have been many obstacles along the way. Some of the struggles along the way are managing school, my work, stress, friends, and family. It has been hard to be able to handle working on my collection and brand while still being a high school student who still has pressures from peers, society, and social media. However, finding a balance between what I love to do and still being a kid is important.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a fashion designer. I specialize in my structural avant garde designs and combine my fashion and activism in my designs. I believe that fashion gives people an identity and a voice. At my most recent solo show at NYFW, I shared my mental health journey through all the ups and downs of being a teen, fashion designer and an activist called “Unseen.” It describes how I have felt my voice is not heard and how everyone can find strength in themselves and those around them to rise again to heal.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
