Today we’d like to introduce you to April McCullough.
April, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m an actress and a (new) mom living in West Hollywood. Growing up in Indiana, I was not able to fully imagine the diversity of experiences that would be awaiting in my adoptive home of LA. Becoming a part of this community of artists has changed my life. I’ve had the desire to perform for an audience for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I used to watch people and try to see the world from their eyes. Now, my favorite part of the process is preparing for roles by imagining the events in the script through other people’s perspectives. It’s wild. This thing that has been forever present in my life is now my job! Even though being an artist is a challenge, it is simply who I am and part of my identity.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This pandemic has had a real impact on performing artists. We need to be in front of people to do our art. Painters can paint alone, writers can write alone, but the challenge with actors is our artistic expression requires us to share close intimate moments with other actors. That said, I don’t know any artist that hasn’t had challenges thrown at them both before and because of the pandemic. I have faced many challenges and struggles as an actress, but the main challenge I faced in my journey is moving to Los Angeles by myself with nothing but a few suitcases. Navigating a new city alone was terrifying but ultimately it has been an exciting adventure. LA has given me numerous opportunities to grow and be part of an artistic community. I met my partner and learned to trust my artistic process through those connections. Now that I have built a family with a child, a partner, and a pup- I’ve planted roots and am thankful to call LA my home.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve dedicated my life to being a working actor and have enjoyed every step in the process. From constantly training to improve my craft to meticulously budgeting to manage the reality of being “a starving artist,” I have kept my passion. It’s hard to describe the feeling of being in front of a live audience or film set. Tackling a new challenge comes with a mix of nerves, fear, excitement, and flat out fun. I am proud to say that I have worked as an actor in numerous films, shorts, theatrical productions, commercials, and TV shows including The Resident, General Hospital, and Run Hide Fight. I am particularly proud of my work opposite Frank Langella in Lapham Rising which has not yet been released. I’m also excited to share that I just wrapped two more TV shows that will be airing later this year. I’m not allowed to announce them yet, but if you follow me on social media, I’ll be sure to give everybody the heads up!
