Today we’d like to introduce you to Amari Jackson.
Hi Amari, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began pursuing makeup a year after I graduated high school, I’ve always been interested in makeup I just never took the first leap into it until my freshman year in college. It started off as a small hobby to make money, I literally only charged $30. I mostly worked on my friends and myself only. I realized I actually wasn’t bad at it so I decided to start taking clients, I was so eager to take off I used to pass out business cards at the mall to anyone I saw, this was back in 2015. I made my business page and promoted, even still business was slow and I remember always feeling discouraged a lot about my work then. I began putting makeup second and would treat it as a side hustle, looking back I feel like thats why things weren’t moving at the pace I wanted it to because I wasn’t consistent. Fast forward to 2017, I was pregnant with my son and I wanted to be more focused in my career so I decided to quit my job and become a full-time MUA and to this day that has been the best decision I’ve ever made. Being that it was and still is my only Income its made me go extra hard in all aspects. I’ve been building my brand for six years now and I’m proud of how far I’ve came. I continue to invest in myself & my skill by taking classes & networking. I love what I do & meeting great people while doing it! I’m forever grateful for the talent God has blessed me with.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
One of my main struggles is self-doubt, constantly comparing myself to others. It’s human nature to do that, But at times especially now the way social media is (follower count, likes, etc.) it can be overbearing. I manage just by reminding myself that people actually love my work & are genuinely rooting for me (it’s important to keep real ones around you, lol), as an Artist you can be your biggest critic.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a MUA, I specialize in beauty makeovers. I think of faces as canvases each person is different. No art is ever the same & I take pride in that. I’m most proud when I have a client who has never gotten her makeup done and once she sits in my chair, I basically change her life, lol. It’s the best feeling. What sets me apart from others is I’m really a vibe in real life, it’s not just me doing my job when you make an appointment with me it’s a whole experience. Most of my clients always come back!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Honestly, I don’t have a mentor. I figure things out myself mostly, but I do network in the beauty industry so I’m always open to business plans with other people who do the same/or similar things as me.
