Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexia Jones.
Hi Alexia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m the fifth of seven children born into favor. Without the help of my family, I’m not sure where I would be today. My praying mother and grandmother, Stacey and Roselyn and father, Roderick Jones instilled in all of us the importance of having faith and believing in self. With that knowledge, anything is possible.
My natural ability in dance was evident to my mother long before I can remember taking my first class. She says I’ve danced since I could walk. I recall beginning at the age of five. I started at Kids In Dance under the direction of Darlette Johnson-Bailey; here is where my natural ability grew. Ms. Darlette poured into, pushed me and developed my gift. Winning competitions and being requested for performances became the norm. In middle school, I captured the attention of Ms. Tanya Jones, coach of the award-winning Westbury Blue Diamonds high school dance team. I became a feature dancer for this amazing team while only in the 7th grade. Coach Jones eliminated comfort zones, fueled my fire to audition, and became an official member of the Westbury H. S. Blue Diamond Elite Dance/Drill Team. I also received countless amount of training from my oldest sister, Courtney Allen, who graduated from Sam Houston with her degree in fine arts. The accolades continued, and being on two competitive dance teams changed nothing. Academics remained first. It’s because of the standard set that I was able to audition and be accepted into AMDA, College of the Performing Arts in Los Angeles, becoming the second of seven of my siblings to attend college.
My plan is to fulfill my dream of becoming a professional dancer and hairstyle.
With my hair services, I want to eventually create my own nonprofit organization to give back to my community. We all know if you look good, you feel even better; my organization will give back to those who can’t financially keep themselves together because we all deserve to look our best. Another long term goal of mine would be to have my own hair salon, all over the world selling my very own organic hair products. I have been doing hair since elementary school. My mom does hair so it came naturally for me. Dancing and doing hair are my two greatest passions. I just recently received my Bachelor of Fine Arts-Dance Theatre Degree with a minor in business. The dance theatre program is an eight-term program designed for either the traditional four years or a fast-track program completed in 2 1/2 years. I just recently finished all eight semesters without taking off for a break. I started off on Zoom in my tiny living room in 2020, right after high school graduation, straight into the days of Covid, then miraculously graduating in 2023; it is still very mind-blowing for me. Something unique that separates me from everyone else is the fact that I have one true goal. That goal would be to show the world that people like me can accomplish what society might say is impossible. I am saying this because I have worked so hard to get here. Everyone has a sob story, but not everyone is trying to change the future of their current reality. I would never wish the life I grew up in on my worse enemy, but without that life, I wouldn’t be who I am today. So change is good, I want to break all generational curses. I want to make a strong impact in my community and on my family, showing young boys and girls that if they work hard, they can achieve many goals. I come from a family of seven siblings who lived under the roof of one mother. We all have different fathers so life was very complicated. My mother did everything she could to get us to where we wanted to be. Only two siblings out of those seven have graduated from college. I am the 5th child of those seven siblings fighting to conquer my dreams. Fighting to show them that they can do it too, and more. I was born and raised in Houston, TX. I’ve gone to many schools in Houston my entire life, and not once have I ever come to visit California.
Then one day, I decided I wanted to pursue the rest of my dance/hair career in California, so we worked hard to make that happen. With hope and grace and faith, we made it happen; and now more than ever, I believe that I am doing all the right things to get to me where I want to be. My next step on this journey is to brand myself in all the ways I know how. I want my hair career to leave the ground just like my dance career is and I know I will make that happen. I just need to work hard and stay dedicated and not only will I accomplish being a professional performer but a hairstylist as well. Not only am I proving to myself that anything is possible when you strive for what you want, but I’m also proving it to the world and to my siblings. I want them to know that just because we didn’t have the easiest path growing up doesn’t mean that you can’t create the life you want to live. My dad always told me that if you believe in anything, then it will happen and I truly believe that I will be able to take my degree and continue striving in my career.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Unfortunately, it has always been a struggle. I’m still waiting for the struggle to get a little easier. The thing that weights us down the most was not having financial stability. As well as being black in America. So sadly, the obstacles never really stopped. My mom raised us the best way she could. I appreciate her more than she can imagine. She raised seven children by herself so money was not always just there, but regardless of the money we still survived. Other struggles that went along with the money was that we couldn’t keep a house for that long. We moved a lot during my childhood so changing schools was a constant thing for my siblings and I. Things had gotten really bad one year to where I had to move with my friend so that I could continue going to school in the area because it was too much for my mom to take us all to different schools from the area that we were currently living in. She didn’t want to force us to change schools during the middle of the school year, so I lived with a friend for a year or so until my mom moved again and then we moved schools again. My siblings and I all went to different schools, and when we changed schools, there were still different. On top of that, my father was the only father that was present. My siblings and I have different fathers so things were already uncomfortable, but being the only child that is able to see her father on the regular is very traumatizing because how is that fair to my siblings? Even though it wasn’t my fault, I still have a hard time understanding that, that is just how it is. So things have always been difficult but I have always made the best out of any situation, which is why I moved to California to break these generational curse. The struggles won’t stop until I change the narrative.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Alexia is a versatile dancer who moves with grace and passion through every step. Her movements resemble wind and water-like elements with bold hints of contortion aspects. She is a magical creator working in the mediums of dance, hair, and film, producing work through her love of art. Her passions and priorities lie in trying to make the world a better place through art. She’s trained in various styles of dance since the age of five. Alexia also earned her B.F.A. in Fine Arts from AMDA College and Conservatory and now she is striving in her greatest passions. Her versatility has allowed her to perform in many different dance genres. From parades to plays, concert dances, solo performances, and even a talk show. She is more than grateful to have such a passionate dance life but she would love to hone in on her cosmetic life. Showing the world that there is more than one side of her. What sets her apart from others is that she will use her art to hold the world as well as herself accountable.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was pretty quiet and self-reserved. I was always a nice shy girl that faded to the back. I never got into any fights. I never worried about being popular. I always was told that I was like the mom of the bunch. I never liked trouble I never wanted to cause trouble I just liked to stand up for myself and stay true to myself. If you ask anybody, they will tell you that I’ve always came off as if I was older than my age so I definitely have an old soul. I always knew there was more to life than what’s been told, so I knew I’ve been special ever since I could remember.
