Daily Inspiration: Meet Aaron Covington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Covington

Hi Aaron, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a creative. The first movie I co-wrote was Creed, which was a great experience. Since COVID, the lockdowns, and the writer’s strike, I’ve had to expand the ways I use my creativity. So now I’m venturing into the social media space and podcasts, along with my screenwriting and directing ambitions.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Things were par for the course before 2020. I had some successes and landed some really fun and challenging jobs, but I also had my share of failures with pitches that didn’t land, jobs that I didn’t get, and projects that just completely fell apart. The last four years have been very rough because there is just so little going on. Even within my network people have not had the amount of opportunities they had before. The strike was particularly devastating.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m probably best known for Creed. I also worked on the NBC Sitcom Grand Crew, which was really fun. I worked with a bunch of my friends for that show, and we had a blast. It deserved more seasons! Lately, I’ve been podcasting, Black Guys on White Movies is the title, with my good friend, Bernard, and we always get into good discussions. It allows me to think about movies and culture in a way that I enjoy.

As a writer, I like to be genre agnostic, but I tend toward dramedy. I like things that feel real and poke fun at our reality at the same time. I feel like that can be done well in any specific genre. Writing is all about setting a tone and existing within that tone. Personally, I feel like structure is a strong suit of mine, and that requires knowing a variety of story types.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Being able to put something out into the world and receive a return from it, part of that return is monetary, but not all of it.
