Today we’d like to introduce you to Zhengyingyue “elaine” Huang

Hi Zhengyingyue “elaine”, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Zhengyingyue Huang, and I often go by Elaine. I am a classical soprano with a passion for opera and a strong commitment to promoting cultural diversity in the arts. I hold a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Kansas, as well as degrees from Temple University and East China Normal University.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of performing in leading roles in a variety of operas, including Cio-Cio-san in ‘Madama Butterfly’ and the title role in ‘Suor Angelica.’ My work has taken me to festivals and performances around the world, including the Russia International Art Festival and the San Miguel Institute of Bel Canto.

In 2021, I founded the Asian Classical Music Initiative, an organization dedicated to celebrating and promoting the works of Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander composers. This initiative has been a fulfilling way for me to contribute to the classical music community by highlighting diverse voices and fostering a deeper appreciation for our rich cultural heritage.

I am also actively involved in music education and mentoring young musicians. Through my work with organizations like the Music Teachers National Association and the National Association of Teachers of Singing, I aim to support the next generation of artists.

I am excited to share my journey and insights with you today, and I look forward to discussing the evolving landscape of classical music and the importance of cultural diversity in the arts.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Navigating a career in classical music, particularly as an opera singer, has certainly not been a smooth road. Like many in this field, I’ve faced various challenges along the way.

One of the primary struggles has been the intense competition and limited opportunities in the opera world. It’s a field where many talented individuals vie for a relatively small number of roles, making it crucial to stand out not only in terms of talent but also in networking and personal branding. This reality often necessitates constant auditions and a willingness to travel extensively, which can be both physically and emotionally demanding.

Additionally, as a soprano from China, I’ve encountered cultural barriers and the challenge of being typecast. There are certain expectations and stereotypes about Asian performers that can limit opportunities. Overcoming these preconceived notions has required a persistent effort to showcase the diversity and depth of my artistic capabilities, beyond what might be traditionally expected.

Another significant challenge has been financial instability, which is not uncommon in the arts. Pursuing a career in opera often involves substantial personal investment, from costly training programs to travel expenses for auditions and performances. There have been times when balancing these financial demands with everyday living expenses was particularly tough.

Despite these challenges, I’ve found ways to persevere and grow. Founding the Asian Classical Music Initiative was one such way, allowing me to create opportunities for myself and others while promoting greater diversity in the classical music world. These struggles have not only made me more resilient but also more determined to advocate for underrepresented voices in the arts.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As an opera singer and classical musician, I specialize in bringing to life the rich and diverse repertoire of opera and classical music. My work primarily involves performing in operas, concerts, and recitals, where I interpret and present a wide range of musical works, from well-known classics to contemporary compositions.

I am particularly known for my work in both traditional and new opera. I’ve had the privilege of performing leading roles in renowned operas such as “Madama Butterfly” as Cio-Cio-san and “Suor Angelica” in the title role. In addition to these, I’ve also been involved in premiering contemporary works, such as the chamber opera “Snow Angel,” which explores themes of personal identity and recovery.

One of the aspects of my career that I am most proud of is founding the Asian Classical Music Initiative. This organization aims to celebrate and promote the contributions of Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander composers in the classical music genre. It’s been incredibly rewarding to create a platform that not only showcases the richness of these musical traditions but also fosters greater understanding and appreciation across different cultures.

What sets me apart from others is my deep commitment to diversity and inclusivity in classical music. I strive to bring a unique cultural perspective to my performances, blending my Eastern heritage with Western classical traditions. This fusion allows me to connect with audiences on a deeper level and to present a more inclusive and diverse representation of classical music.

Additionally, my work often involves a focus on social justice themes, as seen in projects like “Snow Angel.” I believe in the power of music to address important social issues and to inspire change, and I aim to use my voice not just for artistic expression but also for advocacy and awareness.

Under my guidance, many of my students have excelled in prestigious international competitions, consistently winning top prizes. My teaching philosophy emphasizes a deep understanding of music, technical precision, and expressive artistry. I committed to nurturing each student’s unique talents and helping them reach their full potential.

My comprehensive approach to teaching, combined with my performance experience, sets me apart as an exceptional instructor. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced student, my lessons are tailored to your individual needs, ensuring a supportive and enriching learning environment.

Overall, my journey as a classical musician and music teacher is driven by a passion for the arts and a commitment to fostering a more inclusive and diverse cultural landscape.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories revolves around the Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year. Growing up, the Spring Festival was a time filled with joy, excitement, and cherished family traditions. It was a special occasion when the entire family would come together to celebrate, and the atmosphere was always vibrant and festive.

I vividly remember the preparations leading up to the festival. My family and I would clean the house thoroughly, symbolizing the removal of the old and welcoming the new. The streets and homes were adorned with red decorations, which are believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. The highlight was always the reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve, a feast filled with delicious traditional dishes, each carrying its own symbolic meaning.

One particular Spring Festival stands out in my memory. It was the year when I was chosen to perform a traditional song during our community’s celebration. I was both nervous and excited, as it was one of my earliest public performances. The encouragement and applause from my family and neighbors made it an unforgettable experience, and it was one of the moments that sparked my passion for music.

After the performance, we continued the celebration with firecrackers and fireworks, lighting up the night sky with dazzling colors. The entire neighborhood seemed to come alive, and the sense of community and togetherness was palpable. It was a magical time, filled with laughter, warmth, and the hope of a prosperous new year.

The Spring Festival remains a beloved memory for me, not only for the festive activities and delicious food but also for the sense of connection and tradition it fostered. It’s a time that reminds me of the importance of family, cultural heritage, and the joy of celebrating together.
