Conversations with Yi Ding

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yi Ding

YI, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I completed my bachelor’s degree in fashion design in Florence, Italy, and I am in attend my MA course in Knitwear Pathway in Paris. I am obsessed with the decorative fairy tale design style and the combined use of retro materials,This also sets the tone for my design style. Currently I am trying to use the innovative language of intangible cultural heritage in my design, and share the results on my social media platforms.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like all designers, I received good positive feedback in the process of sharing my work, and I also encountered a lot of plagiarism and reference. The biggest problem I want to solve at the moment is to realize the transformation of market-oriented products from the design of artistic expression, which is a tough test of my cost control and supply chain cooperation capabilities etc.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a knitwear&Womenswear designer, I Focus on creating natural, hand-made garments and sustainable fabrics whilst working towards building a Circular Fashion System, I also hope to achieve the sustainable continuation of traditional cultural innovation through my own efforts. At the same time, I realized that good designs/products need to gather a large enough voice to be spread. For this reason, I have been learning to run my own self-media to pave the way for my future entrepreneurship. The rapid dissemination of modern media information requires independent designers/artists to master the content skills of operating personal IP. Before meeting a good team or co-production partner, one person is a team.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think my future products will adopt a different business operating model. At present, I prefer to create my own independent IP image and establish a brand story through the social media. Through small but precise high-quality creative output, establish a market cooperation model with B-end channels,at the same time, I also hope to try to provide customers with solutions/professional consultation through my professional capabilities. The business model of aesthetics does not necessarily only rely on product deformation.
