Today we’d like to introduce you to Yanghuixiao Gao.
Hi Yanghuixiao, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey in the world of storytelling began in China, where I pursued studies in digital media art. It was during this time that I stumbled upon a transformative Japanese film called ‘Memories of Matsuko,’ directed by Tetsuya Nakashima. This cinematic experience served as a profound awakening for me, igniting a deep-seated passion for the power of storytelling to illuminate the human experience and evoke positive change.
Initially, I embarked on my career as an editor, honing my skills behind the scenes. However, as I delved deeper into the craft, I discovered my true calling lay in writing and directing narrative films. This realization prompted me to pursue further education, leading me to film school in the United States after four years of editing experience.
At Emerson College, where I pursued my MFA in Film, I embraced writing and directing as my primary forms of self-expression and exploration. Alongside this, I gained invaluable hands-on experience in various aspects of filmmaking, including camera work and lighting, serving as a producer and cinematographer for fellow filmmakers’ projects, which allowed me to expand my horizons across genres, from documentaries to experimental filmmaking. Additionally, I seized opportunities to intern and assist production companies in Los Angeles.
After graduation, I packed up and made the move from Boston to the bustling hub of Los Angeles. It was a big step, but one I knew I had to take to chase my passion for creative storytelling. These days, you’ll find me wearing many hats – director, producer, writer, cinematographer – all in pursuit of telling stories that resonate with people on a profound level.
And when I’m not on set, you can usually find me on a yoga mat somewhere, finding inspiration and balance to fuel my creativity.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Navigating my journey as an independent filmmaker has been a mix of challenges and triumphs. One significant hurdle I faced early on was cultural adjustment. As a non-English speaker, I grappled with the task of accurately expressing my thoughts and opinions, which added an extra layer of complexity to my creative endeavors.
Financing my short films proved to be another obstacle. Securing funding in the competitive landscape of independent filmmaking required resourcefulness and determination. Additionally, breaking into renowned festivals to gain exposure for my work was a daunting task, but one that I tackled head-on in pursuit of recognition and visibility.
Through it all, I’ve come to realize the true power of perseverance. By staying true to my vision, focusing on crafting compelling stories, and constantly refining my craft, I’ve managed to overcome obstacles that once seemed insurmountable. I’ve held onto the unwavering belief that my work will speak for itself, and this conviction has become my guiding light, propelling me forward even in the darkest of times.
Despite the countless hurdles along the way, there have been moments of pure triumph that have made every struggle worth it. I’m incredibly fortunate to have recently earned official selection status for my latest short film at esteemed festivals like the Academy Awards® accredited HollyShorts Film Festival and BIFA qualifying Directors Notes. These milestones stand as tangible proof of my perseverance and dedication to my craft, fueling my determination to continue pushing boundaries and chasing my dream of weaving captivating narratives in my films.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
In my multifaceted role as a director, producer, writer, and cinematographer, I specialize in crafting narratives that delve into the subtleties of the human experience, particularly from a female perspective. My work is defined by its focus on personal growth and struggle, themes that resonate universally but are approached with a distinctly feminine sensibility.
I am known for my ability to direct and produce stories that are both authentic and nuanced, with characters that feel real and relatable. Whether I’m exploring “what if” scenarios or delving into the depths of personal struggle, my aim is to create narratives that touch the hearts of audiences and leave a lasting impression.
What I am most proud of in my work is the authenticity and warmth that I strive to imbue into every project. I approach each endeavor with dedication and passion, always seeking to be an active problem-solver and ensure that every aspect of the production is meticulously executed.
What sets me apart from others in my field is my keen observational skills as a filmmaker. I draw inspiration from the world around me, paying close attention to the nuances of daily life and the people I encounter. This attention to detail allows me to infuse my stories and characters with authentic elements that resonate deeply with audiences.
Whether I’m writing, directing, producing, or behind the camera as a cinematographer, I make it a priority to deeply understand every character and aspect of the story. I approach each project with the same level of care and attention, believing that the more effort and dedication I put in, the more authentic and impactful the final product will be. It’s akin to tending to a garden – nurturing each element until it blossoms into something truly beautiful and meaningful.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those embarking on their journey, my advice is simple: follow your heart, trust your instinct, and be patient with yourself. Let your passions and ambitions guide you. Remember, success doesn’t happen overnight. Allow yourself the grace to learn and grow at your own pace; Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your career.
Kindness is key. Foster genuine connections, support your peers, and cherish the friendships you make. These relationships not only enrich your life but also provide invaluable support and camaraderie during challenging times.
The journey may not always be easy, and there will undoubtedly be obstacles along the way. However, it’s essential to keep pushing forward, to keep trying, and to never stop pursuing your dreams. Remember to take care of yourself amidst the hustle and bustle of life. Self-care is not selfish; it’s a necessary component of success and well-being.
Inevitably, there may be tasks or jobs that you don’t particularly enjoy, but they may be necessary to make ends meet. Nevertheless, carve out time, even if it’s just a few minutes a day or week, to engage in activities that bring you joy and align with your career aspirations. These small but deliberate actions will gradually shape your life and career in unexpected ways, leading you closer to your goals. Trust in the process, stay resilient and never lose sight of your dreams.
