Today we’d like to introduce you to Vincent Lim
Vincent, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Dimsimlim known as the ‘Wolf of Wok Street’ is a highly esteemed chef/restauranteur who has gained international recognition for his exceptional culinary skills and expertise in Southeast Asian cuisine.
Vincent has showcased wok cooking to the world in a new and entertaining style through social media. He has amassed more than 4M followers across TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
Working at the first-class lounge at Emirates allowed him to cook for celebrities such as Daniel Riccardo, NZ All Blacks, Nicole Kidman. He then moved on to, cooking and hosting the Australian Music Awards, collaborating with KFC to create the world’s first ‘Peking Cluk Burger’ to speak on one of the largest stages in the world at TEDx Sydney about ‘The nostalgia behind Chinese food TED Talk’.
From there, he has appeared in countless TV appearances including guest judge on MasterChef, Snackmasters, The Cook Up, The Morning Show, Channel 10, Channel 7, and SBS. But his proudest achievements would be opening his own 200 seater restaurant at the age of 22 after his father passed away and realizing his true passion for wok cooking.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Vincent’s greatest struggle was taking the risk of pursuing showbiz. Running his 200 seater restaurant and trying to balance his life as a content creator. From the kitchen to being infront of a camera is no easy transition. Building up the confidence to drop out of university, to opening a restaurant, then telling his asian family that he wanted to move on from the restaurant to pursue being a content creator was his greatest struggle.
He remembers a time where he had to invest everything, every week back into his business in hopes that one day the restaurant would turn a profit. At night when the restaurant was closed he would have to clean then film and edit the content he made, so the work wouldn’t flow into the next day.
In Vincent’s words “My dad passed away when I was 22, the same year I decided to drop out of university, quit my job, move cities and open a restaurant. I risked everything to make this work. I promised my dad I would look after mum and little bro. I had to make it work no matter what.”
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Vincent is a chef, restauranteur and content creator who specialises in Chinese cooking using a wok. What separates him from others is that he was a professional in his field. Everything you see him post is a proven recipe which he has used in the real world served to customers.
His proudest moment would be chasing his dreams using his fathers recipe to open the first restaurant eventually leading to being on Masterchef as a guest judge to showcase his Signature dish to the world.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Vincent started making content at the start of covid, he was fearful that his restaurant may not have any customers due to the lockdown. He went online and made his first video which achieved over 20m views and over 150k followers.
The most interesting lesson he learnt was “to give it a go. You never know where life can take you.”
