Conversations with Tyona Bowman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyona Bowman

Hi Tyona, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hey everyone! My name is Tyona Kinu Bowman (pronounced Tie-on-a Key-nu Bow-man). I’m an actress, director, and producer based in Los Angeles, CA. Right now, I’m diving into an exciting new project that I know will make all of the comic book-loving nerds—myself included—go wild! My team and I are developing a brand-new fantasy YA webcomic called UKE, which will be hosted on the popular Webtoon platform. It’s part of my new startup, Kinu Komics, a space I’ve created to bring amazing stories to life, crafted by talented webcomic writers and illustrators.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We’re currently in the developmental stages of production, and since this is my first time creating a comic book, it’s definitely come with its fair share of challenges. One of the biggest hurdles we faced was finding the right illustrator—someone who could truly capture the essence and tone we’re going for. That search took about 30 days, but after some careful consideration, we found the perfect match, and things have been moving much more smoothly since then. That said, like many indie projects, we’re working with a modest budget, which is why we’re also crowdfunding through our Patreon. I’ll share more details about that toward the end.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
A lot of people know me from my acting and dance work on platforms like Prime Video and Tubi, or from my production work with Stainless Cinema across sites like YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat. However, what most people don’t know is that I’m also a bit of an artistic entrepreneur. I’ve always wanted to create a platform that highlights the work of other creators and artists, giving them a space to showcase their stories. That vision has now come to life with my new company, Kinu Komics. Through Kinu Komics, I’m partnering with Webtoon to feature webcomics from talented writers and illustrators nationwide. We’re kicking things off with our first fantasy and coming-of-age comic, which will drop the first episode in mid-January 2025. So stay tuned, and be sure to subscribe to our Patreon for updates!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’d like to give a huge thank you to my incredible team behind Stainless Cinema and Kinu Komics. They continuously push the creative boundaries and help bring ideas to life in ways I could never have imagined. Without their dedication, hard work, and passion, none of this would be possible.
