Conversations with Tetiana Kalivoshko

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tetiana Kalivoshko.

Tetiana Kalivoshko

Hi Tetiana, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My artistic journey began in Ukraine, where I studied at the L’viv National Academy of Art, honing my skills in painting, sculpture, and interior design. Inspired by the rich cultural tapestry of Ukraine. I furthered my education at East China Normal University in Shanghai, where I explored new perspectives and techniques. Later, I embarked on a collaborative project that took me across different cities in Ukraine. Together with a team, we created installations that celebrated the beauty and richness of Ukrainian culture. Concurrently, we had the unique opportunity to bring to life the pages of the renowned Chinese artist ZHEN ZHENGANG’s book, “Fall In Love With Ukraine,” through the medium of film. This experience was truly unforgettable, as it not only allowed me to express my artistic vision but also fostered a deep appreciation for the cultural connections between Ukraine and China.

I am immensely grateful to ZHEN ZHENGANG for his inspiration and guidance throughout this project. His work served as a catalyst for creativity, igniting a passion within me to explore themes of love, culture, and connection through art.

Eager to explore new opportunities, I relocated to Miami in 2017, where I found a vibrant artistic community. My first exhibition in the U.S. at Miami Art Basel week in 2017 marked a significant milestone in my career, showcasing my work, “Spring War,” to a broader audience.

Subsequent invitations to exhibit internationally, including in Santiago, Chile, and at Art Palm Beach, further solidified my presence in the global art scene. Pieces from my “Spring War” collection found permanent homes in couple museums in Ukraine, symbolizing the transformative power of art to convey messages of peace and renewal.

Today, as I continue my artistic journey, I am driven by a profound sense of purpose to share my art with as many people in as many countries and cities as possible. Through my work, I strive to communicate vital messages, and one of the most pressing issues on my heart is the ongoing war in Ukraine. As an artist, I believe it is my responsibility to shed light on such matters and to inspire empathy, understanding, and action through my creations. With every brushstroke and installation, I endeavor to amplify the voices of those affected by war and to advocate for peace, unity, and compassion. My art is not only a means of expression but also a tool for change, and I am committed to using it to make a meaningful impact in the world.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My artistic journey has been a mix of highs and lows. While I’ve experienced moments of success and fulfillment, I’ve also encountered challenges along the way. Navigating the art world in different cultural contexts, managing financial constraints, and overcoming self-doubt have been some of the struggles I’ve faced. However, these obstacles have strengthened my resilience and deepened my commitment to my craft.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in painting, sculpture, and art installations that explore themes of cultural exchange, peace, woman power, woman rights. I’m known for my use of materials and techniques, as well as my ability to convey powerful messages through visual storytelling.

One of the projects I’m most proud of is my “Spring War” collection, where I transform symbols of conflict into symbols of hope and growth, such as turning weapons of war into flowers.

What sets me apart from others is my unique perspective as an American-based Ukrainian artist with influences from both Eastern and Western cultures. I strive to create art that bridges cultural divides and fosters understanding and empathy among diverse audiences. My dedication to conveying important messages through my art sets me apart and drives me to continue pushing the boundaries of creativity and expression.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I envision my art being prominently featured in some of the world’s most prestigious museums, reaching a global audience and sparking meaningful conversations about important societal issues. I am committed to using my art as a platform to address pressing topics.

Additionally, I aspire to expand my creative endeavors beyond traditional art forms by directing a couple of movies. Through film, I aim to further amplify the messages and themes present in my artwork, reaching new audiences and engaging with diverse communities on a deeper level.

Ultimately, my goal is to continue pushing the boundaries of creativity and expression, leveraging various mediums and platforms to make a lasting impact in the world. Whether through museum exhibitions, films, or other artistic endeavors, I am dedicated to using my voice and my art to inspire, educate, and provoke thought.
