Today we’d like to introduce you to Sorry Ghost
Sorry, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Sorry Ghost began as a little dream Matthew and I (Daniel) had when we were freshmen in college at Louisiana State University. We’d known each other from high school, but we really connected at LSU and had the idea of starting a loud, fast, punk band (the sound has changed a ton since then haha). We got our start playing parties in college, and when we graduated, we decided to really focus on the band – a move to Los Angeles was the big plan. It was terrifying since we both were born and raised in smallish town Louisiana, but we knew it was a smart next step for us. At the time of our move, we had cycled through a couple other band members on drums and rhythm guitar, but, ultimately, only he and I made the move. Shortly after settling into LA, Matthew met Tate while working together at a restaurant, and Tate officially joined the band as drummer in March 2022. That was a huge step forward in terms of our sound and tightening up the brand. We were still looking for the final piece since we felt a fourth member was necessary to revamp our sound. That addition came when we met Sean in Orlando while on tour in summer 2022. We all felt an immediate connection, so I convinced Sean to take a chance and uproot his entire life after he graduated from college in 6 months. I just always felt like the addition of Sean was crucial to complete our sound. I sold him a dream, and, crazily enough, he was brave enough to make the move in 2023 at 21 years old across the entire country having never been to LA before. We really became the Sorry Ghost we are today in fall 2023 when we released our track “robin,” and it took us a bit to nail down our sound and our look. We were super lucky; 2024 was a crazy year for us thanks to the algorithm gods on social media, and our fanbase has completely exploded since just a year and a half ago (we went from about 10k fans to 175k+ across all platforms by some fluke accident). Everything started happening so fast – labels reached out, we signed with a booking agent, bands starting asking to tour with us. It’s so funny because Matthew and I still feel like two kids from Baton Rouge, Louisiana who just tossed around the idea of starting a band during freshman American History at LSU. Now, we’re going on tour in April all over the western US (tickets at sorryghost.com)!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It is NEVER a smooth road in entertainment (well maybe if you’re wealthy or super connected – of which we are definitely neither). Some struggles have been classic inter-band arguments, which only really happen because we are each so passionate about Sorry Ghost. These types of arguments are usually resolved quickly because we’re all best friends and communicate constantly. Being in a band truly is like being married to three other people at all times. But these are all small time fish (hehe) compared to what Daniel personally went through a few years ago when his mom passed away. That was devastating not only from him obviously, but for the entire band as we each feel the pain when one of us is struggling – especially with something as monumental as the death of a parent. Music was and always has been a form of therapy for us, and so many of our songs touch on loss and grief. I know Daniel really expressed all the pain he was experiencing through his songwriting. Music is cathartic in this way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Sorry Ghost is an indie rock band originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and based out of Los Angeles for a few years now. We sound like a blend between the softer jams of Peach Pit and The Backseat Lovers and the shoegaze/emo energy of Turnover, Tigers Jaw, and Day Wave. We’re known for blending those sounds as well as our goofy online videos focused on life in a band, the music industry, and general sketches found on any of our socials. We like to think of what that we’re most proud of and what sets us apart from others is one and the same: a genuine authenticity and a desire to build a community with our fans. We believe being your true and complete self is the easiest way to make yourself stand out. We’re just four silly friends who enjoy making rock music. Being thought of as “serious, aloof rockstars” never had any appeal to us.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Favorite childhood memory for each of us centers on experiences with music. For Tate that’s drumming for the first time in his church growing up, for Sean that’s getting his first guitar at 13 and learning the chords to his favorite songs, for Matthew that’s writing his first song with high school buddies, and for Daniel that’s rushing home from school to spend hours mastering bass lines and watching in amazement as they slowly came together.
