Conversations with Sherrell Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherrell Jackson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I started braiding hair in school for extra money, and my braiding hobby grew into a business via word of mouth. By the time I was 16 years old, I had an extensive clientele and was one of the top braiders in North Hollywood, CA. My knowledge and creativity for hair lead me to my 22-year position at a wholesale company.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, the journey has been smooth. The struggle I experienced was crossing over from being a full-time stylist to working for a company full-time. As a result, I could not attend to my clients anymore and referred them to my stylist peers. However, I have made time for a few clients who have been with me since my stylist journey.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Creative Director and work in the Importing hair industry. I specialize in creating hair products such as braiding hair, crochet items, ponytails, wigs, clip-on extensions, hair accessories, color mixes, and creative color variations and blends. I am known for RastAfri’s Braiding hair products and for creating trendy styles for all of our hair products.

I am most proud of the sisterhood I created called the “RastAfri Tribe.” The group consisted of over 25 talented Balck women from different walks of life that were brought together extraordinarily in the beauty space as Brand Ambassadors. We traveled together, attended hair conventions, and made a HAIR statement everywhere we went. The RastAfri Tribe formed a bond within themselves and developed meaningful relationships with each other. Their synergy has gone far beyond RastAfri, and we are proud to be a part of their journeys.

I believe what sets me apart from others in my industry is I am always willing to take risks and set trends. I challenge the norm with bold color combinations and new fiber techniques and never take no for an answer. Recognizing loyal stylists also distinguishes my company from other hair companies. Every year, we give away $500 to 24 stylist who faithfully uses our products on their clients.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My mother was an advocate for my career. She created a space for me to perfect my styling skills and introduced me to the owner of my company. My mentors, the late Mr. Kim, John, and Jinah Chung taught me a lot about the hair industry and guided me through my creative space to thrive with ideas through genuine leadership.
