Today we’d like to introduce you to Shein Aung.
Hi Shein, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Shen Htet Aung. I am a professional editorial and fashion photographer based in Los Angeles, United States. I’ve been in LA for over a year now. I was born in Burma (Myanmar). I came to United States with my family. I lived in Maryland before I moved to Los Angeles in 2021. The reason I moved to Los Angeles was to pursue my career in photography. I’ve been a professional photographer for a little over two years now. I always have love for photography. Photography allows me to create and capture moments, landscape, and feelings of people. In the beginning, I didn’t know what kind of photography I want to create. I started out with doing some street photography. That time I had no idea about how to even take a good picture. During the Covid time, I had a lot of free time in my hand like everyone else, also it gave me opportunities to learn and study about photography. The more I kept on shooting the more I learned about myself as a photographer.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can look back now and say it was all blessing to be able to create dope images and work with so many talented people. Also, there were many obstacles and challenges along the way. Especially during Covid time, it was a rough time for everyone. One of the biggest challenges was moving out here to LA on my own and pursue my dream in photography. It wasn’t easy at all in the beginning of my photography career. Still not easy until now, but it gets better.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a professional editorial and fashion photographer. I has work featured in numerous publications. I’m proud of all the work that I’ve done in my career. Los Angeles is home to a lot of artists and creators. We all came out here to chase whatever our dream is. I don’t want to create just pretty pictures. I want to create images and want to capture pictures that has something meaningful or has story in it. I want to capture expression, feeling, emotion or body language that helps tell a story. Maybe I think that’s why I was so drown into editorial stuff. I’m so grateful and thankful for being able to do those things through photography. I want to give back and contribute to society with my talent and knowledge for better world. There is no right or wrong in photography. It is your freedom to create.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I would say I’m a risk-taker. I took a risk to come to LA on my own to become a photographer. One of the hardest parts was leaving my family and sibling behind. Some of the things I’ve done are I don’t even see them as risk-taking, for example- asking people what you don’t know. I understand people don’t like to get rejected or people don’t like to get a “NO” as an answer. It is okay to ask for help. Sometimes I think people don’t like to take a risk of asking for help. From my experience, asking can take you a long way. You’ll never know until you start asking.
