Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Eastep
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My acting journey began at a young age as a form of self-expression and to overcome stage freight. It was the intimacy of community theater that taught me to allow myself to enjoy the stage by playing other characters. Shortly thereafter, I was offered a small part in a pilot for an episodic series. Despite the size of the role, I was invited on set for the entire weeklong production. Each person, actor and crew, had such important roles in the process. I was hooked, and I fell in love with both acting and the creative process of filmmaking.
At age 11, I was cast in my first lead role, as ‘Young Cecilia Dram’ in Meow Wolf’s mind-bending short film “A Day in Plenty Valleyyy”. It’s currently installed in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Area 15 (Omega Mart) attraction. Shooting this project was no less invigorating and truly opened my eyes to the opportunities to make (the weirdest) art through cinema. For this performance, I was honored with Best Performance in a Short Film from at the Young Artist Awards and was also nominated for Best Actress by Young Entertainer Awards.
After hearing great things about John D’Aquino’s Young Actors Workshop in Burbank, I began actively training for screen acting. The team there has always been fabulous and have truly became mentors. They were all invested in my career and took the time to help me find my actor voice.
In 2021, I co-wrote the short film, SYOTOS, where I starred alongside talented actors such as Judah Prehn (Resident Alien) and Arianne Martin (Haunting of Hill House). As it ran the film festival circuit, I was honored with ten Best Actress awards and several nominations. I am grateful and honored now to be nominated for another Young Artist Award, this time for Outstanding Writer for SYOTOS.
Aside from acting I find joy in fashion and art, though creating new characters, up-cycling clothing, and creating looks, stories, and drawing. I attend a charter school for creative and art students where I am a continuing member of our school’s student advisory council and play on the varsity volleyball team.
I am proudly represented in LA by Mitchell & Talent Associates.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It can challenging being a young actor. Auditions happen in waves—often many at once, or back to back, but there are quiet seasons too. You just have to always be ready because you often don’t have much time to prepare, and I always try to send an off-book read. I was trained to breakdown the characters by understanding what circumstances led them to the situation they are in, the emotions they feel, and work out what happened before vs. what might happen next. Sometimes you’re given a hint in the script, often times you’re given nothing, but that’s where you are given an opportunity to create your version of the character.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an actor (SAG-AFTRA), a writer, an artist—I just love creating. I’m certainly proud of my latest acting role. I play a lead character in a film titled “SUNSET” (https://imdb.com/title/tt32567858) which is written and directed by the Marcotte brothers (Nick and Trevor Marcotte). It’s a coming of age, vampire story that takes place in the 80s in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The project as it stands is a short; the feature film is currently in development. The scene we shot involves a group of friends, one of whom comes into contact with a vampire, which puts them all into dangerous situation. It’s an intense scene with some of those fun elements of a classic horror. The Marcotte brothers were wonderful to work with, and I think they have an amazing vision for this film. No doubt that I’m excited to see where it leads. Overall I think my dedication to my artistic work, in whatever medium, is obvious to those who know me well.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the energy and creativity of LA. It’s brought me opportunities to meet and know so many talented people who have inspired me, challenged me, and have helped shape both who I am today, and who I can become tomorrow.
