Conversations with Sam Lukowski

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Lukowski.

Hi Sam, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I don’t really understand why these kinds of questions get asked. The more an Audience knows about an actor’s personal life, the less likely they are to accept the illusion of character in the story. I mean, that’s more of a spoiler than telling someone the ending. The Audience is paying good money to be entertained – and it’s all dependent on the power of suggestion – so I’m not really sure how to ever answer this question. Denzel Washington said it better: “An actor should be good – not known”. I agree with him. My origin story is boring: I started auditioning as a kid and I never stopped. Sometimes I get lucky and book work, other times I pay my bills by working different day jobs. That’s really all there is to it. I’m lucky to be here and I appreciate every opportunity.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nope.

I struggle to pay my bills every month.
I work several hard labor day jobs.
I travel all over the country and sleep in my car sometimes.

I’m lucky if I even get to see my wife for an entire month.

And I don’t come from money and I don’t have any nepotism in this crazy industry we call professional showbiz – so, no – it has not been easy for me.

But I also signed up to be here – so, I can’t really complain all that much about it either.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a character actor.

I’m paid to play characters on the screen.

That’s really it.

I love it, but finding work is exhausting – both physically and financially.

What sets me apart is twofold:

1.) I never screw over my employers – in fact, I make a point to go the extra mile without charging extra for it.

2.) I both know and accept my character type – which I have no real control over – I play sleazy, violent, abusive white men.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I don’t know.

Probably the first time I ever heard a paying Audience applaud my performance.

Truth is – I just don’t know – I was sick a lot as a kid – I do remember watching old movies with different people growing up – I miss that.
