Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Rena.
Hi Ryan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi, thank you for having me on voyage. I got into music when I was seven years old. The first album I remember that got me into music was the Beatles album “1”. From there on out, I fell in love with music. At 17, I started taking my musical career to the next level. I fell in love with Electronic Music at an early age. I admire artists such as Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Afrojack, and Tiesto. When I started making music, my goal was to be able to change the way people felt, connect with people through music, and spread a positive message. It took some years to see what artist I wanted to be.
I switched from genre to genre, trying to find my sound like every artist. It was not long, though, until I knew it did not matter what genre I made. What matters is that the music is good, and it is what I feel like making, and that can make a difference in the world. I am fortunate to have my good friend Zack Lear at my side whenever I have a new track. He has helped/taught me to write, mix and master all of my tracks. I learned how to DJ after I was good enough at making music. Not so long I was going to different clubs, trying to get my foot in the door. Luckily I was introduced to one of my best friends to this day, Lyon808, who helped guide me. I was a wallflower studying other DJs and producers for the first couple of years. See what made them stand out or how they will bring the energy out of the crowd. I always envisioned myself being up there and things I would do differently. It helped me shape the artist I am today. After my first single in 2021, “set me free,” I started to get some attraction from people. I could not believe how many people were streaming the song. It was fantastic to hear people liking the music and playing it, sending me stories of them playing it in the car.
After five years of watching and learning, I finally got my first show at Club Bardoe second club in Avalon, in May 2022. I remember that one close to my heart. It was my first time playing in front of others. It was a feeling I would never forget. I could play other shows after that and started gaining momentum.
However, I told myself I wanted to put my heart and focus on music. I wanted to be the best artist I could be. As much as I loved playing shows, I knew that music was what I wanted to do more and write amazing songs. I took a break in the wintertime and just sat in my room and wrote/produced. Eventually, I wrote my top track in my career, “our moment.”
Not too long this year, I released a single, “Our Moment,” with Andrew Coronel and Ericha Mary, which has 130 thousand streams on Spotify shortly after that. I was given an opportunity to play at Avalon nightclub again; however, it was to play mainstage. A funny story was about four years ago. I took a snap chat saying, “I will play here again,” and now my dream is about to come true. Since then, I have played many excellent/ amazing shows, such as Avalon, Reforma, and the House of Blues in Anaheim.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it was not a smooth road. There were times I doubted myself and my ability to write music. I had to overcome a lot of writer’s block. Every new artist will deal with this problem in their journey. Also, too you are always learning new things in music it never stops.
Shows were not so easy to do. As I have mentioned, it took me five years to get my first show. It looks like there are lots of patient and trust in the journey.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am also a songwriter.
I love to play guitar, the instrument I know how to play the best.
I am most proud of the friendships I have made along the way. The fantastic people who I got to talk to after the shows. I am proud I did not give up and continued my path. I am proud that I am still finding new ways to make the best music I can make and taking risk.
What sets me apart from others is my music production. I use all analog sounds. Their something that stands out sonically when you use real instruments in songs. Another thing that sets me apart from others is my music style.
I am currently working on my new single ” forever” that will be out the 28th of this month.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to me the most is that I stay true to the music. I want to write music that inspires others and uplifts people wherever they are. Be able to create a message of positivity and finding your purpose in this life. I always told myself I wanted to inspire others and change the world better than I arrived in it.
