Conversations with Ryan Ramirez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Ramirez.

Hi Ryan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born and raised in Orange County, I grew up around music. It all started when my parents showed me a Michael Jackson concert video. I was absolutely blown away. At only four years old, I knew deep down that music was my calling as soon as I saw that performance.

Growing up, I dabbled in different music scenes and spent the majority of my childhood/early teens playing in different rock bands as a drummer. My dad was a drummer in various bands in Orange County and growing up he showed me how to have great stage presence, emphasizing the importance of putting on an entertaining show. While playing in those bands, I discovered my love for performing, but it wasn’t until high school when I really developed a deep love for singing. I joined show choir during my freshman year and noticed I got a lot of attention when I sang. I loved the way it felt to have the spotlight as a singer. Justin Bieber was the first R&B/Pop artist that I gravitated towards because I loved his style of singing and his charisma.

When I was 16 years old, I discovered songwriting and started working with different writers and producers to develop myself as a songwriter. Along that journey, I started performing at different schools in Orange County and uploading covers on YouTube to foster my development as an artist. My current manager, Jacob Moore, saw my passion and drive and decided he wanted to be my full-time manager. Shortly after, a veteran creative director/choreographer, Stixx, reached out to me on Instagram because he really believed in me. He wanted to help develop me into a timeless artist and joined my team alongside Jacob. I then started releasing my own original songs and putting out music videos to build a core fanbase. Currently, I’m continuing to build my fanbase, engaging with them on social media and in person at events, shows, and any other ways I can build real relationships with my fans. Most importantly, I’m honing in on becoming one of the most impactful artists of this generation.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
In the music industry, you face obstacles and challenges every single day. It is a fast-moving industry, subject to change at a moment’s notice. This constant change has helped me learn to be adaptable to new situations and resilient in the face of adversity.

In terms of struggles, most artists can relate to this one: music can be an expensive industry. I’ve always had to work hard and find creative ways to fund my projects while still giving myself enough time to be fully enthralled in my music career. But this gives me an appreciation for my hard work and the work of those around me once the final project is done. Whether it’s a music video, photoshoot, song release, or anything else, knowing you’ve put your hard-earned money into something you’re passionate about is very fulfilling.

I think the biggest obstacle I have is having a fear of the unknown. Things are always changing in this industry and it can be pretty tough to find your “spot” and continue to adapt to things always changing. One thing I’ve learned is that you have to be mentally tough to be in the music industry. You might not always like what you hear from others and it can be scary to challenge yourself when the outcome is so unpredictable. I always keep this in mind: it’s okay to be nervous or fearful of something, but never doubt yourself and your ability to achieve greatness.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Overall, I am an entertainer. Songwriting was the gateway for me to further express my creativity in different aspects and I take pride in always working to improve my songwriting and creating music. But those are simply tools for me to be the best entertainer I can be.

What separates me from others, and what I take pride in, is that I really study the greats… pinpointing the mentality, work ethic, and decision-making of the greatest to ever do it. I have always been fascinated with artists that have left a huge impact in their era. Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Usher, Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber… these are just a few of the greats who influence my performance, artistry, discipline, and career.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
To me, the music industry is really what you make of it. It’s definitely a great time for independent artists since you can create your own music with a home studio and upload your music to streaming platforms right from your computer. The opportunity is greater than it’s ever been for upcoming artists.

With so many tools available to upcoming artists, I think we will see a huge shift in the amount of artists creating a sustainable career from music. Session work, live stream gigs, selling merchandise through social media, connecting with other artists… all of that is so much more accessible now than it’s ever been. An artist’s career can live entirely on the internet and still create a stable income, which is pretty cool. It seems to me that you have a bit more of a say in what level you want your career to be at, instead of either ‘making it’ or not.

I think we’re also gonna see a lot of genre blending and new genres pop up over the next few years. Hip hop is already making such a huge influence in other genres like pop-punk and rock, and there are new artists being discovered every day who have a really unique sound.

This is just what I think might happen… but then again the industry moves so fast we don’t really know what could happen, which is probably the most exciting part of the whole industry.
